what exactly were those "evils"? i've known countless wiccans of all ages, and never have i come across anything in their rituals that was evil, yet some people in here claim this to the be case.

if you left wicca or any branch of paganism because of it's evils, what were they? please be specific and honest.

It's quite rare to come across someone who was Wiccan but then decided it was evil. That's because they'd have to have been deluded in some way... A) deluded by the occasional satanic dabbler who claims to be Wiccan, B) deluded by whatever current religion they belong to... or deluded by that one time they drank a little too much out of the chalice and got brain damage from smashing their head on the altar on accident.

I've only ever heard of Wiccans leaving Wicca only to turn around and call it evil in a few specific cases. One was an Evangelical Christian author who claimed to have been an ex-Wiccan, but has since been proven to be a fraud. The others were ex-husbands or ex-wives of Wiccans who were suing for child custody, and using ignorance and misunderstanding of the religion against their ex in court. So, when you hear about ex-Wiccans calling Wicca evil, they're probably either bitter ex-wives/husbands, or Evangelicals who are lying about their former Wiccan involvement.

But most of the people I know who left Wicca don't do it because they believe it to be "evil." Typically, they leave Wicca peacefully and respectfully, because that path no longer works for them. They tend to go in one of a few specific directions -- either away from any form of organized religion, into some Eastern or New Age path, or to a deeper and more fulfilling Neopagan Reconstructionist path. Wicca often acts as a gateway into Neopagan and Magickal paths. It's a starting point, and many Wiccans come to a point in their path where they either want something deeper, or they give up on religion all together.

It gets them the attention they want. That's all. I've met so many online that claim to have been in Wicca/Paganism or a Ceremonial Mage yet when I ask specific questions to see which trad or path, etc they were on they always came up with a quick dodge "I don't talk about that stuff anymore" yet they are the one's who bring up how "evil" it all is. I had a young woman tell me that she used to be a High Priestess of the Gardnerian Trad but couldn't answer a single question I put to her about the different intiations. You'll be lucky to find one person who even knows what an athame is or what it's used for... without looking it up (IF you get any answers from these "ex-Wiccans" at all)

Didn't look at the asker before I got riled up in anticipation of answering this one! Was fixing to give you a diatribe on the 'evils' of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and other organized religions. I'm not even Wiccan, and this Q had my blood ready to boil.
Haven't read the other answers yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing if there are any real ones that make logical sense.
Blessed Be!

I'm with those who answered that it is because they want attention. I'd like ot add that some people "leave" Paganism in general because they have run their mouth way too much, made themselves look ridicule and couldn't own up to their words/actions. It is easy to evillize something that made one person look at his/herself and s/he didn't like what s/he saw. This is just conjecture though as I do not know anyone who left Wicca/Paganism, etc. Except to follow their path in another pagan direction.

But to call Wicca/Paganism, etc evil is to be Ignorant.

I personally have never met a person who has left wicca. Of the wiccans that I have known, they were some of the nicest people I have ever met. Never had any problems with them and if I had problems I could go and talk to them. Another thing about wiccans is that they were some of the most accepting people when it came to religion. I have never personally known a wiccan who bashed other people's religious beliefs or tried to convert people.

I know a couple former Wiccans who simply said, "It doesn't work for me and it seems lovely, but I just can't bring myself to believe it. I really believe this instead." One's an atheist, one's a liberal Christian. I have no problem with that type.

Then there are the ones who claim to have "left" for conservative Evangelical Christianity, put up the websites, write books, speak, evangelize, etc. The ones with sicker imaginations than Stephen King's. Those, I tend to think, "At least those people are Christianity's problem now."

LOL. I have a close friend that was also nagged out of practicing witchcraft, (but not wicca.) I think her family just drove her nuts enough so that her life is easier this way. Lame.

If you are truly interested in why people leave Wicca, I would suggest ex-witch ministries. These are Christians who are former Wiccans and witches, and they are generally very even-handed about their experiences, which generally lack anything "evil."
