I sure can, I always have. Many of them witness the acts of people who are supposed to be Christians, the hypocracy and the anger of people who say they represent Christ but in truth follow what they only think is the gospel, to the logical person it is cruel and judgemental.

Why would you believe in the God of someone who is mean and nasty?

I can understand why some people are disheartened by what others do. That’s why it is wise to ascertain the truth of things for one's self. Noting that many atheists laud themselves for being so remarkably intelligent and logical; wouldn't it then, seem rational to actually apply some of it? Would you stay out of school and protest the universities because some of the students flunk? What kind of intellectual mind set judges a concept on the misinterpretation and abuse of it by others?

I can answer an honest question. But I would dismiss much of what is thrown at me as garbage by people without a leg of truth to stand on. I think some people just enjoy agitating others.

God isn't "mean and nasty." People are mean and nasty. Thus, so are people's rendering of things that are originally good. God is love. People with no love in them cannot understand this character trait. You can't give what you don't have. Jesus made it abundantly clear of who His followers are when He said "If you love me, you will obey what I command (John 14:15)." He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him (1John 2:4 ).

So, then how intelligent is it really to base your claims and rebuke of faith on the testimony of liars rather than the Testimony of Jesus Himself? You have placed your measurement upon those who have failed the standard rather than the standard itself. This would seem to make nonbelievers out to be no different really, than the hypocrites they use as cannon fodder in their assault on God’s character. That's tragic.

They are both two sides of the same coin.

I get it and I sure do, despite being mighty spiritual myself. I find that some atheists however, fail to communicate that they have a code of secular morals and do not worship Satan. This could put religious folks at ease.

Also, a mean spirited atheist kinda fella at my old job made all the Christians take down their Jeusisthereasonfortheseason screensavers and little Jesus figurines. That was cold.

I do think that religious people can use their "faith" to irrationally punish people (alleged "witches", people getting abortions, etc..) and they demand cash in the form of "tithes" when we know God already owns everything! Thats if you really believe in God.

Its a lot harder to pay attention to your own soul, sins, etc and to try to help others as the legendary Jesus was said to do...

I understand what you are saying, but that is very rarely the reason we are atheists. Sure, many of us turn away from *religion* because we see hypocrisy, but we end up without a belief in god because that is just the logical conclusion to come to. To us, there is no reason to believe in any god, so we don't.

Dear Mary -
You make a good point. That is why I look to God and to the Bible for direction rather than following a person.

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Basing our opinion about God Jesus and Christianity on what Christians do is a mistake. We all need to base our opinions on God Jesus and Christianity on what the Bible says.

Hopefully you will have better experiences in the future when you have to deal with Christians.
I will go so far as to say I too have had some altercations with some Christians here on R&S but they have all been 'fundies'
Those folks are way too rude.
I am Roman Catholic

Yeah, it's got to be hard to be constantly told you're going to hell.
On the other hand, atheists can tend to sound pretty snotty telling religious people that their beliefs are all a crock.
