My daughters insist on wearing dresses to school. We live in oregon and it is nearing winter. It's been about 40 to 60 degrees here on average lately. I tell them they are going to freeze but they don't care. I normally go ahead and let them wear the dresses with proper coats, figuring they will freeze and learn their lesson and wear pants next time, but it doesn't seem to phase them. I figure if they really want to wear them, and its not bothering them to deal with the chill then it's not hurting anything to let them. Their father on the other hand gets mad and says it shouldn't be up to them and they are going to get sick. Which is right?

They are girls. Let them wear dresses. Years ago girls didn't even think to wear pants. Buy them some thick tights and let them go. If they are cold they will dress warmer. My 6.5 year old wears dresses all the time and I have to bite my lip about it as well. We live in New Hampshire... its cold out here too everyday. Its been as cold as the 30's already.

I see both points. If it's not bothering them, wearing dresses isn't a big deal. It's also not really their decision- it's yours. As for getting sick, that's actually a myth. People get sick during the colder months because they're indoors more with other people. Passing on germs is a lot easier to do when you're all in a confined space together. Why not compromise? They can wear dresses if they're wearing leggings, tights, or pantyhose. At least then you'll know their legs are covered, even if just partially.

You do not get sick from being cold you get sick from viruses and germs.
A dress with leotards is as warm as pants.
If you squelch them on everything you will battle every step of the way. Give in to the little wars and be firm on the big ones such as bedtime and study and minimal TV.

Is this the hill you want to die on. Don't sweat the petty stuff.

Girls love to wear dresses at a certain age when they get to the teen years the only thing they will wear is jeans. Pick your battles, your children need to feel they have some options and are not being bossed for no reason.
If I was your child I would be knocking that ridiculous argument of cold/sick down in no time. It makes you look petty and controlling. Have some discussion and make them feel like they had some input.

Could you have them wear some sort of pants over the outfit while they wait for the bus, and then when they get to school they could take them off? It is not going to be cold in the school. Or set some rules. Get a thermometer and tell them if it is above a certain temp they can wear a dress but if it is colder than a certain temp they have to wear pants.
I grew up in MN so It was cold a lot but never got sick for wearing a skirt/dress.

My daughter went through a phase where all she wanted to wear was dresses too. As long as they are wearing warm shoes and tights, then I would let them wear the dresses. If you are letting them wear spring dresses then maybe your husband has a point, but if they are wearing winter dresses and proper shoes then let them wear what they want to wear.

My daughter went through a phase at about 6yo when she only wanted to wear dresses. I always let my kids make their own decisions abount mundane things that really don't affect anyone but themselves so let her. When winter came or it was raining, she wore a pair of jeans under it. It wasn't a big deal and she didn't get sick. she was just trying to be herself and we let her.

Now that she's 17, the whole dress thing was just prep for now with the hair dye and piercings. but still, it's no big deal.

The weather doesn't cause illnesses, GERMS do. So wearing dresses to school is not going to cause them to get sick. It doesn't matter WHAT a child is wearing, if they are exposed to germs from coughing/sneezing, child wiping their nose on their hand touching your child they will get sick even if they're wearing jeans and sweatshirts.

i think if they have thick tights on and the dress has long sleeves then let them wear them. If they are more summer dresses then i say No.

You're the parent and their father is absolutely right. You have to tell them what goes and not let them just do whatever they want. Besides wearing dresses in the cold is not smart and they can get sick. You know what's best and you're the authority figure, so act like it. Don't let kids tell you what they are going to do...
