Most cakes now have multiple tiers, some vanilla and some chocolate. Go to a bridal show to taste for free, and write down flavors/take pictures of what you like. Buy the cake decorating tools and make some small cakes to practice on well in advance of the wedding.

No personal experience of my own, but I have two friends who made their own cakes. One friend had a wonderful time making a fabulous cake; the other friend's cake just became a huge stress.
The big differences:
Friend 1 is incredibly artistic and an amazing hobbyist chef. Making a wedding cake was well within her abilities, as she had plenty of experience cooking complicated dishes and desserts. She had also made a wedding cake for her cousin.
Friend 2 likes to cook and cooks well, but she had very little experience with desserts and cakes. Making and decorating the wedding cake proved to be a big challenge in and of itself. The cake challenge, added to all the other tasks she had to do the week before the wedding, was nothing but a source of anxiety. The cake turned out very nicely, but almost at the expense of her sanity.
In short, if you know what you're doing, go for it! If not, now is not the time to experiment. :-)

You can't take a cake decorating class and become an instant expert! This takes a lot of practice---a lot more than you will have time for.
Why not have a very small cake made for you to cut, and the rest sheet cakes. Much cheaper.

that's no longer undesirable success whether that's definately a foul theory for my area. while you're fairly, impressive at adorning brownies that's an selection yet there is plenty greater that is going into making a marriage cake than your average birthday cake. you moreover mght would desire to evaluate the logistics. have confidence me as quickly as I permit you recognize it is going to be aboslutely NUTS on wedding ceremony day attempting to handle the basics like making waiting, getting all of us coordinated, and so on. the final concern you like is to be troubled on the subject of the cake on precise of it. possibly you are able to attempt to paintings off a commerce. Get somebody else who additionally does cake and grant to do one among their comissions in the event that they do your wedding ceremony.... Or start up doing brownies for different events now to earn some money on the part to pay for a bakery cake?

1-- Usually a White/Yellow cake w/ fruit filling works out nicely--as it isn't too heavy.
2-- Not usually but most require an appt. You could, most of them give you flavor selections. Bridal Shows usually have vendors and you can try a bunch of different cakes...
3--Depends--there is no way you could do your own cake--you'll be too busy w/ other things.
4--No fricking way! No time!
YOU JUST ASKED THIS 20 MINUTES AGO!!! GEEZ!!!!!

Okay, to you this suggestion my be cheesey or perfect! haha
My brother got married last year and he and his fiance we're VERY into "do it your self" things...so....
They decided to make their own cake, but didn't want to make two different flavored cakes, so instead, they made a cupcake wedding cake! It was BEAUTIFUL. They asked around and found a family friend that knew how to decorate cakes/cupcakes. So she came over, along with bridesmaids/groom/bride/me(the sister) and we all baked cupcakes and then learned how to decorate them properly. each layer alternated chocolate and white. It tasted awesome plus everyone could just come up and pick one instead of having them cut and served!! It turned out beautifully and i HIGHLY recomend it!!

I went to a wedding once and had the best strawberry cream cake. It was a layered cake too.
Most people 'love' chocolate.
I hope this helps & good luck.
