No - He did NOT have to die. "For God so loved this world ... "
Remember, we have the imprint of God's very image on us. We were made in God's own image, and God loves us very much.
There is nothing that obligated God to come to earth as Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and be our atonement, our sacrificial lamb. That was purely His choice - a love so great that we can't even fathom it.
We get close when we see a mother sacrifice herself for her child, but we can never understand how much God loved us even to die for us while we were still at war against Him and His enemies.
He has the upper hand over satan no matter what else happens. God is infinite and eternal and all powerful. Satan was created and finite and limited. Jesus said that He saw satan fall from heaven like lightning. To God, that's no big deal.
What GOD'S big deal is all about is bringing as many people into heaven as He can - without violating our free will, that is.
I hope this helps.

Why? No one else could pay this price, the price was a sinless perfect creature in exchange for the perfection that Adam destroyed.
Had Jesus not done it, then no one could be saved. He is the Propitiation for our Sin. He is our Redeemer.
Satan has always been the Clown in the Sin Circus. He gets a lot of attention and credit, but he has no real power.
It is the Sin that is the killer. And this is what Jesus had to take out of the picture. Which He did thankfully.

Jesus is NOT God. He is the son of God. the only angel that had not committed sin in heaven. EX. Re.1:6 "and has made us to be a kingdom and priests TO SERVE HIS GOD AND FATHER."
There are over 500 places in the New Testament stating that God is God and Jesus is Jesus. Read.

No. God didn't need to send Jesus to die for our sins.
The idea of Jesus comes out of the old testament prophecies of a Messiah for the Hebrews. In the old testament, this person is described more as a king, or restorer of the independent nation of Israel. However, the Christians coupled the old testament prophesy with the desire to expand the covenant with God to gentiles. So, Christ became the Messiah for all mankind, not just the messiah of the chosen people.
It also became more of a salvation after this world, rather than the old testament messiah, who was to be more of a this world savior.

Do you understand all the laws of physics?
Neither do I. And neither do I understand all the laws of the spiritual world, which seems to run, in a way, parallel to ours and in fact is affected by, and affects ours.
This is clear though; The rift between Gods creation (man) and God, caused by a rebellion started at the beginning of creation, can only be justified by a pure, selfless sacrifice of life and bl__d .
Since no one is pure aside from God, He had to offer himself. This he has done in the form of Jesus of Nazareth who was accepted by many as the Messiah, or prophesied Savior.
The laws of the spiritual world, like those of the physical, must be followed to achieve the desired results. A person who wishes to know and be known by God must fallow the spiritual laws, just as you must rub the match head briskly against a ruff surface to create friction, if you want to produce a flame.
Doing all the nice and helpful things in the world, will not get you close to God. You must accept the sacrifice that God has offered to you. You can not get close to God in any other way.
It is the law of spiritual physics. God himself can not change this.
This sacrifice was a judgment against Satan. He has been condemned and the time is near for his final destination.

Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane that "the cup would pass from him". Jesus had human characteristics and didn't want to die unless absolutely necessary. He was scared as you can imagine. But, he knew he needed to because without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. Bottom line: He didn't have to, but he wanted to even through fear and angst. God's love for us compelled him.

You have an interesting point. But He DID have a choice. He is God - He did not have to create us, knowing what would become of us through sin. But His love was so immense that He created humans, knowing that one day His Son would have to die. From the beginning, God knew He would have to suffer for us...but He chose to do it anyway.
Jesus did not want to endure the physical pain, but out of love for the Father (and for us), He did so, giving Himself once for all.
That's the God of love and mercy.

He didn't _have_ to die for our sins, but that was the only way for us to be forgiven and have fellowship with him. He demonstrated his love by dying for us.
And it's not like he's fighting Satan in any kind of actual battle. They both know who's stronger.

Furthermore--Why did God send his only son to die for our sins? God created us and allowed us to sin to begin with. God defined sin. God fabricated the "Jesus dies=sins wiped away" equation. So the whole thing is created by God from the ground up.

Jesus died because he ran through the local shopping mall at Jerusalem with a pistol...oops a bullwhip...called the Temple at Jerusalem (where religious merchants sold their tax-free products) and the local politicians decided to kill him over it (disruption of business) and remove him from the picture which they did by public execution (along with two other criminals).
Jesus was just one of three (or more) criminals to die on Good Friday - just part of a long parade of those on death row who automatically die if they happen to live in Jerusalem or the state of Texas today.
