If yes, is verbal identification sufficient or is an identification card required?

If verbal identification is sufficient, what information is required i.e. name, birthday, address, etc.?

Detaining someone and asking for ID is considered a seizure under the Fourth Amendment, however, the officer only needs to satisfy a small burden of proof to require one.

A passenger in a vehicle could be required to show ID if the officer had any evidence at all of a law violation or a suspicious activity.

This could be anything from not wearing a seat belt, to furtive movements in the car, or several other things.

There is a very simple test to see if any of the above qualifies. Ask if you are free to leave. If you are told no, then he has a reason to ask for an ID. Show him your ID and take it later if you have a problem.

not to do so would I am pretty certain be looked upon initially by the police involved in the stop as suspicious, also it is likely you could be charged with interfering with the police in the execution of their duty.I think everyone is required to give an identification wether you are in a car , on foot, or riding a horse, etc.
