I am looking at making a new PC well a new case, motherboard, CPU, and CD drive. But I plan on moving my old HD (which has all my data and my OS on it) from my old PC to my new one. I read somewhere that Windows will not recognize this as the same system and I will have to buy a new license. Is this true?

As you are changing the hardware but not the HDD with your OS on it. I see no reason why you have to contact anybody. It is only peripheral stuff and not the OS.

XP will only allow you to replace less then three hardware devices. If you replace more then that XP will think that this is a different computer and therefor will not function. Your best bet would be to purchase a new hard drive for this new system and install XP to the new drive. When you attempt to register XP it will probably not allow the registration and you will need to call the number that is provided on the registration screen. Just tell them that this copy of windows is installed on only one computer.

Next, hook up your old hard drive in your new system as a slave. (be aware of the jumper settings) "C" drive to Master and the second drive to Slave. You will then be able to drag all of your data off of the old drive and paste it onto your new drive. You can then delete Windows from the second drive and use it as a back up or data drive.

No, windows will still work on the new system. When you activate the copy it will not work online you will have to call the phone number and tell them that it is a upgrated pc.

You should be able to transfer all your files and stuff from the old one to the new one with out any problems. This site should give you instructions or at least help in some way.

If you have a full copy of Windows then you might be allowed to move it. You will be asked to call India to get it activated again.

You may have to reinstall XP from scratch, but you don't need to buy XP all over again.

I would recommend that you first create backups of all your data and installation software before you begin.

Good luck.
