I went to the assistant DA and said "look, I was speeding, I got caught. I was not trying to speed, just not paying attention. Is there anyway I can keep this off my record? I am pleased to pay the fine."

He said "sure". I paid the fine, no record.

So, go to court and ask to speak with the assistant DA and at least try it.

Lasers are not only very accurate, they are very directional. The average laser beam is only 3 feet wide at 1,000 feet, making it almost foolproof when it comes to identifying the speeding vehicle.

Unless you can prove a faulty laser, or inadequate training, the evidence from a laser is strong in court.

If you fight and lose, you are not going to get any financial breaks from the judge. I think most people would agree the best course to take is to admit responsibility, advise the judge this is not normal driving behavior for you, and hope the judge reduces the fine.

You didn't give details (i.e., was it you? were you actually speeding? what were the conditions? how fast were you going? what was the speed limit? was this your first moving violation? etc etc etc), so I can only give a generic answer:

The only way you can beat such a speeding ticket is if you can PROVE BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT that either the gun wasn't calibrated correctly (i.e., its certificate of operation or similar hadn't expired), or that the officer was inadequately trained in its use (i.e., his certificate or other proof of training hadn't expired).

Although you could just ask the cop relevant questions, without a certificate or similar to prove that the device was checked and/or that the cop was trained to use it prior to the expiration of that certificate, how would you know that his comments are accurate? It's his word against yours, and it's pretty rare that the cops lose.

Either pay the fine or throw yourself on the mercy of the court.

Ask when the last time the laser gun was inspected and how much training the officer had in using it.

You're going to lose this and the judge is going to be PISSED that you took up his time when it is apparent to EVERYONE but you that you are guilty. Save time, effort and yourself from being humiliaed and just pay the ticket....
