Why do Muslims reject the existence of a Jewish homeland?? Why are Muslims so opposed to acknowledging Israel?
"Top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat on Monday rejected Israel's demand that the Palestinians acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state." [1]
By contrast, Israel is perfectly willing to accept a Palestinian state so long as Israel is recognized by Palestinians.
“A senior official in the Prime Minister's Office said in response that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert insists that the Palestinians recognize Israel's Jewish identity, as a condition for Israeli recognition of a Palestinian state.” [1]
Erekat offered this astonishingly absurd justification: "There is no country in the world where religious and national identities are intertwined," Erekat told Radio Palestine.” [1]

Since there are clearly a number of Muslim countries that intertwine religion and national identity, this cannot be the reason…so, why, then, do so many Muslims reject Israel’s right to exist, especially when Israel is willing to accept theirs??

I'm specifically interested to know if there are any religious reasons behind this, and explanations either way.

zienzman, if that's what happened, I could understand...but it's not. The Jews that settled Israel purchased most of the land from absentee land owners...they did not dispossess people...they bought and settled mostly uninhabited regions and created something worth having. That prosperity brought in Muslim workers. Not the other way around.

Few Palestinians today are alive who lived in what is now Israel. Their descendents are practicing endemic victimhood, in a fantasy of a land that never existed. Show me the coins that Palestine minted. Who was their president? Fact is there never was an independent country named Palestine.
The Israelis offered to allow Palestinians to live in their land. the Muslims rejected this offer, insisting the Jews had to leave first.
Muslim solidarity apparently doesn't extend to land grants. In spite of copious amounts of unoccupied territory, no other Muslim country has offered to settle the displaced Palestinians.
The Koran specifically says to kill the Jews wherever you find them. This was the next to last Surah revealed, and abrogates all the conciliatory surahs before it.
Muslims are on the wrong side of history. Every civilization that has raised its hand to God's Chosen people has been ground to dust. God made a covenant with Abraham and his descendents through Isaac. Unlike Allah's inconstancy, YHWH keeps his promises. If the muslims get into a fight to the death with Israel, there can be only one outcome.

This is a modern phenomenon. Actually prior to the end of World War two Israel did not exist - never had. The area used to be part of the Ottoman Empire prior to the defeat of the Ottomans in WW1.
Hebrews did live in the general area, but so did Arabs - they are all basically of the same Semitic genetic stock.
However, after WW2 the winners - England, France, the US and Russia sat down to decide how the post-war world would be. They were influenced by a group of people - call them Zionists - who had this basic belief that God had given them the right to the land of Palestine (from the time of Moses).
So one of the things that was done was the creation of the artificial state of Israel by the British, French, US etc., on land that was currently occupied by a mixture of Arabs (Palestinians), and Hebrews (Jews) - many more Palestinians than Hebrews at that time. These peoples had lived together in relative harmony for many years until the Zionists pressured for the creation of Israel.
That is why the Arab world thinks that the state of Israel should not exist. This has also developed over the years into anger against Jews, especially with the way that the Israelis have been treating the Palestinians in recent years.

RACHEL F:
Have you ever read 'Londonistan' by British journalist Melaniee Phillips? Even if you're not English, get this book and read the chapter on ISRAEL. I think you'll find it really interesting and it answers some of your questions :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that 'ThebigM5' is spot on. The Arab world has always been painfully open in its' hatred for Israel. But at the same time, they have never lifted a finger to help the poor Palestinians. Well, other than arming them, that is.
The Palestinians have had a terrible time. But if only they would direct their anger where it belongs: towards the Arab leaders who ordered them to leave Palestine. The same Arab leaders who rejected the partition plan and therefore denied the Palestinians the homeland they would have had in 1948.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to give free water, fuel and electricity to the Palestinians in Gaza EVEN WHILE the militant Palestinians there continue bombarding Israeli citizens with rocket attacks.

Muslims tend to be intensely attached to their religion. Jews are likewise intensely attached to theirs. The Jew will not be converted, and thus they represent a constant reminder to the Muslim that maybe their faith is not the only true one?
Fear based on ignorance of Spirituality is masked by a person's zealot thinking. The greater the ignorance the greater the need to eliminate all thought to the contrary. With a diminished education, and a religion that kills people for minor reasons, fear is rampant in the Muslim community. The anxiety generated within Muslims must be vented in some way. Hatred is a very good way to vent such fear. Convert the fear to hate and project it.
The Muslim religion verges on psychotic thinking and its adherents are held in check by physical abuse. Other religions offer an excellent "enemy" to both hate and kill. So they do.
The only variation in this would be the impact prolonged exposure to both education and an opportunity to experience living absent constant fear might have on individual personalities.
Peace

This goes back to the time of Abraham. Ishmael was the first born son of Abraham by Hagar, Sarahs servant.
According to the Jewish belief (and Christian) God promised a nation with decendants as many as the stars, through Sarah.
Sarah got a little antsy becaue she was getting up there in age, so she gave Abraham her servant, Hagar. (this was not unheard of at the time) and badabing, here came Ishmael.
Now here's where it gets touchy, as firstborn son, he should have had the right to inheritance - to include the covenant from God.
Sarah got very jealous and ran Hagar and her boy off a couple of times, but God protected and brough them back once, but also promised a nation to Ishmael.
According to Jewish and Christian beliefs, God had different plans, and some 10 years or so later, a barren Sarah (well past her menopause years) had Isaac, through whom the covenant was passed.
Muslims believe that that covenant (including what would be the land of Palestine) rightfully belongs to Ishmael and his decendants and Jews believe that it belonged ot Isaac and his decentants.

Robert Spencer had the best explanation for this in one of his books.
In a nutshell, Muhammad laid down a commandment that once any territory had been (militarily) conquered by muslims, it should be considered permanently muslim ... and if any of those lands should be reconquered and islamic control lost, it is the gravest insult to allah himself and should be reclaimed at all costs. (Of course we know that allah is NOT "God" - allah is a repackaged pagan moon god of the cult 'islam' , a fake religion invented by an insane warmongerer and vile maniac named muhammad)
Israel is not a homeland for muslims. It was the historical homeland of the Jews. The concept of muslims as "Palestinians" is a joke. Yasser Arafat himself was an Egyptian.
Since the Jews have reclaimed their homeland, it's had the muzzies furious ever since

A cursory glance at the website makes it abundantly clear that there are Arabs who actually appreciate Israel. I had known this before for some time, as the following four examples of which I am aware attest to: - The son of a Hamas leader who has repudiated his father's virulent ideology (his name is eluding me as I type this) - Ex-PLO terrorist Walid Shoebat, who now advocates on behalf of the country that in his younger years he sought to destroy - Brigitte Gabriel, a Lebanese-born Arab who has become a vocal advocate for America and Israel (and against the forces of radical Islamism) - Nonie Darwish, who was raised in Nasser's Egypt and has, like Ms. Gabriel, become similarly active on behalf of America and Israel and against radical Islamism I am a little confused by the title of the website, as I think that "Arab Zionist" would be a better title for those behind the website, given the origins of the word "Palestine." The very name "Palestine" is a linguistic derivative of the word "Philistines," which denotes an ancient foe of the Jewish people, selected originally by the Romans after they stamped out the Jewish drive for independence in the land of Israel nearly 2,000 years ago.

It's more a secular issue than religious. It's that acknowledgement that the HEBREW people (Jews) are also Semitic which in fact makes them ARABIC. That's why the Palestinians and other Arabs don't want to acknowledge Israel. They being arabic people don't want to acknowledge that the Hebrews are part of them.
In fact if you look at the situation the Palestianians are barely recognized as being Arabic...They're hurded into refugee camps by their welcoming Arabic brothers...It's all a bunch of messed up disrespectful BS. PEACE!

Well I believe since all three religions (Islam, Christianity and Judasim) started there. They need to learn how to share. No one religion is right and that is what everyone from every religion has to understand. Honestly, I think the whole buisness with Israel is silly. No one will ever "win" control over that plot of land. It will be forever in warfare because no one can agree.

The Israeli government has appropriated Palestinian land in open defiance of international law and overwhelming international condemnation.
"People are scared in the US, to say 'wrong is wrong,' because the pro-Israeli lobby is powerful - very powerful." Within the USA anyone who speaks in favor of Palestinian rights and justice is immediately condemned as being allegedly anti-Israel (and frequently allegedly anti-Semitic), shutting down legitimate discussion. A case in point can be seen in the current furor surrounding former President Jimmy Carter who was criticized for his assertion in his best-selling book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, that Israeli obstructionism lies at the root of the failure to achieve a just Palestinian/ Israeli settlement.
The occupation is illegal under international law. Under UN Resolution 242, Israel is required to withdraw from all the territories occupied in 1967, including East Jerusalem.
