She's a little over a year old. She thinks it's just a big game when I try to put her collar on when we're going for a walk. Sometimes it takes so long putting it on - she bites it continually, or she runs away , wanting me to chase her. I thought she should let me put it on right away so we can go for what dogs love - walking.

Yes...........you are right, I can see that she is seeing it like a game. If you chase her, she will want to be chased. If you play this like a game, she will want to do the same.

Let's do a reward system............Here you go.........

Try sitting, calling her, and first reward her for coming with a small piece of her "regular" dry food (one chunk).

Second.....get her to sit (ask her to sit), and then reward her for sitting. Tell her to stay...........another small reward.

Then put the collar on! If she stays while you put the collar on, give her another reward. If she runs away, do not reward her. If she doesn't do the above.............Repeat, repeat...until she gets it right. Please be patient and allow time.

Now, if she does allow you to put the collar on ..........make sure to not only give her the "reward"....but give her a hug and tell her she is a good girl. Don't get loud and get all excited as she will think it is still just a game. Remain calm.

I have a yellow lab too.
I have found this breed to be very gregarious, excitable.
So I think she gets so full of energy at the thought of going out you can't do it fast enough to suit her.
I saw the show called "dog whisperer" and he showed a client how to put on a collar. He had held it out to the dog and let it come towards the collar and than slipped it on. This dog was a older dog though. Mine is 11 months old female and we have a challenge to put on her leash. We have her calm down and sit/stay and quickly latch the leash. I simply insist that she sits before we go out. Or well have a tug of war out the door.
Hope that helps
Marg

my dog is the same, a small min pin. We go out for walks but in the house he doesn't have his collar. At time it takes 5 minutes to put his harness on him. He is too excited and needs to be calmed down. With the cold weather, this is another story. He hates his sweater and the protocol is even longer. He hides his face, crawls under a blanket, and even growls but in the end, once he has it on, he is OK and happily goes for his walk which he loves with or without his sweater.

Call Cesar!!!... No really you just have to establish dominance with your dog... You have inadvertently taught here that this is a game now you have to teach her that this IS NOT a game. Work on ...Come, sit, stay then introduce the collar... or just leave the collar on all the time...but still use come, sit when putting the leash on... the biggest thing is MAKE HER COME TO YOU!!!

Why doesn't your dog have her collar on all the time??? What if she somehow got loose? Nobody would know who she belonged to.

Save yourself the hassle and protect your dog by having her collar on ALL THE TIME!

this is a training issue and you need to start with the basics....stay,come,sit.....your dog is a hunting dog no matter how you look at it and they need to be phsyically and mentally stimulated.

It is a game to her and she wants you to play along.
