Sorry but there really is no good "average", since no tumor is average. It depends on which organs are involved, how many lymph nodes are involved, etc.
I can tell you that for the majority of patients, Stage 4 lung cancer cannot be cured. The 5-year survival rate is about 2%, and 15-35% of people with Stage 4 live 1 year if they're fit enough for chemotherapy, if not that number drops to about 10%.

Overall, fewer than 10% of people with primary lung cancer are alive 5 years after diagnosis. Stage 4 is usually not treated except to relieve pain (radiation to shrink bone tumors, ect) and with medical care, the survival time is about 8 months. Untreated patients last about 4 months, and advanced, end stage lung cancer patients make it about 4-6 weeks.

My mom and dad both have stage 4 lung cancer. They both went through chemo. He has finished his treatment and is doing very well almost 6 months after the diagnosis. My mother is dying in hospice as I write this. The main difference? He quit smoking 10 years before he was diagnosed. She was still smoking after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, all the way up to the day she got put in the hospital with pneumonia - which was the catalyst her health crash.
I can't say for sure that she would have lived much longer but I can't help but notice the differences there.

I read somewhere on the net about a person that was given 6 months to a year with chemo therapy. The person still lives.
Another person replied that they went throug numerous treatments and the tumour shunk down by a half.
No doctor can precisely determine how long you can live.
My grandmother was diagnosed with a last stage Brain tumor. They gave her three months, but after the operation she survived for two years.
She died because she continued to drink and smoke at an old age and did not give a crap.
The most important thing is determination. Go talk to your doctor about numerous treatments.
I have posted a link below to a forum topic. People with similar cases are discussing their stories and what treatments they are taking.

My father was diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer which had metastized to his lymph nodes with numerous tumors in his liver on 10-10-07. He died on 11-11-07. Get all affairs in order now. This is a serious condition and should be taken as such. The doctors must offer chemo to protect themselves, but the question really is, will is help or hinder the last part of life. Good luck
