Both the above answers are right...it is practiced in many parts of the world. Additional note however; in the Navajo culture, sand paintings were never intended to be kept and displayed. They are parts of a "sing" or curing ceremony. The sand is trailed in the proper pattern while the singer (yataalii) chants the ceremony. When the sing is over, the different colors of sand are swept up onto a plate, with an eagle feather, and the sand is dispersed to the four winds. The move to commercialize sand paintings is heavily criticized amongst older Navajos, but in actual fact, the ones you can buy in museums, galleries, trading posts and roadside stands are not traditional. They may use traditional themes and designs, but they are intended as artistic expressions of the culture, not true ceremonials. you can contact the Museum of Northern Arizona, in Flagstaff at www.musnaz.org for further information and links.

Strangely enough it is all over the world. Many Indian tribes practice it. Buddhist monks do it. Even christian farmer in Holland do it to decorate a room for Sunday.
