The number of homeless persons in the US generally depends on what 'spin' you want to put on your story.

The percentage of 'homeless veterans' is acknowledged by all to be grossly distorted and all of the groups reporting the statistics benefit from larger numbers.

The numbers I would like to see are the percentage of homeless veterans with honorable discharges whose status has been verified.

The total number varies. But, I can tell you the recent reports of one out of every four being a veteran is pure nonsense. It is so because neither the group asserting this or the media reporting it has ever bothered to check the DD-214 of those who say they are homeless vets or even ascertained from interviews that they really are veterans.
I did a year as a VISTA volunteer dealing with the homeless in my community. I found most of those "homeless vets" were lying through their teeth! They couldn't respond with the simplest bit of knowledge about the military, any units they served with, or their ranks. Those who really were vets mostly were thrown out of the military for mental conditions which pre-existed their entry into the service.
Even the VA doesn't check. Here in the West the VA gave over 25 years of medical care and a burial in a veterans' cemetery in Arizona to a guy who had never served one day. They have to disinter one body from a vets' cemetery in Long Island because a non-vet was buried in that space who had the same name as a vet who recently died and had already reserved that spot.

According to the latest facts(?) one out of every four homeless ..... are a veteran..... as pointed out many of these homeless lie..... I seriously doubt that the number cited is accurate...... I have known homeless veterans, most of them chose that lifestyle.......they made more money pan handling
than they ever could with a 9 to 5 job...... building a hooch in some wooded area saved them rent and they lived pretty good
Homeless people often select that lifestyle for a variety of reasons...some have mental problems......some have addiction problems....very few are actually forced into that lifestyle. I lived in my car for several years....by definition I was "homeless"

25% of the homeless are veterans however the majority of the veterans that are homeless are from the Viet Nam War. My personnel opinion is that War is Hell and If you come home from a war and are greeted and taken care of it would be like carrying a little bit of hell around for a very long time. After Viet Nam the government didn't want to help the Vets because it was politically un-popular, and the populous didn't want to help them because they hated the war and hated the Vets by association. It's pretty unfortunate.

USA is huge. How come USA people can't find or even build homes? You are a vast nation, floating on a sea of money, guarded carefully by lawyers and crooked Hedge Fund managers. Your 'poor' are four times as rich as the average poor benighted Frog or Towel-Head. So how do you create all those ' homeless'? Are they mad or something?
Veterans are top as long as they don't ask me for a double pension.
