...for illegal immigration from Mexico to the US Southwest? Or should the 1840's be left in the past?

I think Finland used to be part of Sweden centuries ago. Time for the Swedes to settle all over Finland and not obey the laws.

It's not a very good excuse, or at least, it's not a very good excuse unless it's being used by some miraculously long-lived 170-something year old who can actually claim that the border really *did* cross them.

I guess it's lack of understanding and stupidity from both sides. The Nueces river was considered the border for Mexico but the US claimed the border to be the Rio Grand. So it started over land disputes. American eventually gave Mexico 15 million for the land in compensation after the war was over. Another thing about the southwest was the fact that Mexico sold the southwest lands of Arizona and New Mexico to the US for 10 million known as the Gadsden purchase. The 1840's should always be remembered and not just left in the past.
Americans and illegals should know all the facts before they start yelling "go home" and "we are home" b.s. That's why there's problems today. No one wants to understand what happened and yet get mad when they're called a racist.

I would love to see where MoJada got all of her examples. Because wherever she got them they are so bend and misused in order to make people believe that ILLEGAL activity is actually helping our country.

Schools are paid for by property taxes. Illegal Immigrants do not pay property taxes in the cast majority of cases. So they are not helping fund schools. I don't care where you find information to the contrary, that is simply a fact.

Who here pays enough in tax dollars to pay the cost of an emergency room visit for the family? No body. It is called insurance, that flips that tab. Illegals, dont have insurance, so the american tax payer ends up flipping that bill.

And really now? Who is out there using someone else's S.S. number and not taking a minimum of 6-8 allowances? I personally have to take none and have the government withhold to ensure I don't come up owing the government money at the end of the year, otherwise I might bet audited. Sorry but i haven't heard of an Illegal Alien being audited or paying back taxes if they haven't paid enough.

Famailies reunited? Are you kidding? Peoples bogus need to have their extended family live in their home to feel whole is absurd. If it was that important they shouldn't have come here to begin with.

Let me assure you all, the only reason there is even one little iota of debate about this is because certain political parties want to see if they cant get more, new voters on their side....

As soon as politicians really understand that americans are serious that border will be sealed up tighter than a frogs hind side.

And in response to the actual question..... Mexico lost the war, tough..... go home now and try to fix your own corupted, jacked up country for jacking with ours.

The border moved south, not north. Those "caught" in the change became Americans - I don't know of any Americans trying to cross the border to their native Mexico.

Those caught south of the "new" (hundred-some year old) border were Mexican before the border changed, and were Mexicans after the border changed. The border didn't cross them.

Now if the border had suddenly jumped north (from the Rio Grande to the north of Texas, for example) then yes, all those displaced Texans could try to come back to the US, because the border crossed them.

It's that whole flawed logic thing.

I think those the border crossed are Americans. Those who patently were nowhere near the border at the time have no claim at all. They appear to be saying we should have taken the rest of the country too, since it is not THEIR country they want to be in.

However, if we are going back to how land was acquired, how did the Mexicans get it to begin with? And for those they took it from, how many are trying to get back into Mexico?

The whole argument isn't JUST historical, it is backwards.

MOJADA, your facts are incorrect. The SS suspense file exists from the 1/2 (per studies) that pay tax but the services used are not only much greater, the SS itself wouldn't even nearly cover their costs to the SS fund if ever they were legallized. The poor can't cover their own costs in taxes, we subsidize them. That is why all countries in the world that subsidize services limit how many poor people can come.

In regard to illegal immigration from Mexico, I call it what it is, a racist lie. The border hasn't moved in living memory. No one alive today was 'crossed by the border.' Maybe thier ancestors were, but we are not our ancestors. Judging people by thier ancestry is racist, period.

However, as a rejoinder to racist calls for native-born Americans who happen to be of mestizo ancestry, and who's ancestors were, indeed, native Tejanos or Californios when those areas changed political hands, it's more a matter of turnabout being fair play, and even a bit pithy.

Not for the illegals. Those who live in what is now Western United states were given ample opportunity to decide which side of the border to live. FOr those who decided Mexico, it's not our fault their forefather was not smart enough to choose the right country. We never force relocation on any of the Mexicans when we aquire the Western United States.

The meets and bounds were clearly set out, agreed upon and paid for.

Also, is Ukraine still the property of some mythical Soviet Union? No. The USSR was an inefficient government whose citizens wanted no part of. People coming to the U.S. are, by this very action, admitting the failure of their own economies and governments.

All they want is to send us their unskilled , uneducated and criminals to feed off the US . They don't donate anything to the wealth of America , they just bled our taxpayers , health care and schools .
With illegals help the US is slowing sinking into the third world working class society.
It is starting in the Southwest and moving rapidly North . Illegals are turning America into Mexico .

Yeah it's an excuse. They do whatever they want and then whine and make excuses. Now that they are in the majority their excuses will run out.
