If you are asking about salvation from eternal condemnation, I will say yes. If we have to do something to save ourselves then we certainly do not need God...Following Him is just proof that you are saved. It will sound strange to some because it is really very hard to follow Him with all the temptations around. If Jesus save you from the start, would you doubt Him that He was not able to finish what He started? John 10:11 said ..."I am the good shepherd;the good shepherd giveth His life for the sheep." Jesus death on the cross will not be in vain, that was what He meant by His last word "It is finished". He is victorious, The saved was bought by His precious blood... This space is not enough to give all the proof, hope you are enlightened.

Allow me to qualify my post. To me all religion is akin to music; it doesn't matter what style you like but, if you like music, you go with either vinyl records played in hi-fi or you go with an MP3. And like all music "systems" there are of course many shades of grey in between. Personally, while I am not a zealot, I am a baptized Catholic. I find it hard to believe, however, the Bible is merely a book written by people (humans) who were liars and connivers, and who wrote stories using only metaphors and imagination for some kind of recognition. If that is the case then Kudos to them for they have written a book which lasted over 2000 years and has suffered very little editing. The fact is; Our world was a lot different back then. That being said; My answer to your question would have to be a resounding No. Were that the case there would have been no need for Him to "be" on Earth and teach us what He taught. ALL of what He taught us.
As an EDIT for canela; You say nothing about yourself in your profile but you mention falling overboard. I am a boatie and I know ppl who have fallen overboard while at anchor in eye-sight of the CG station and they still drowned. I, too, have faith in my self, but I'm also open-minded.

the bible says that you have to accept jesus into your heart. that the only way to the kingdom of heaven is thru the son so no if you do not get saved then you will not enter the kingdom of god. there are a lot of teenage, women and different bibles that are translated adn broke down to where you can understand it better. I wish you the best in whichever religion that you follow.

No. Because the Bible says that the only way to salvation is through Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life. So if you don't have Jesuschrist in your life you will not be saved...Most likely the other direction is where one is going!

Jesus Christ offered his perfect human life in sacrifice on the torture stake as the price to redeem what Adam had lost, thus ransoming mankind. Jesus paid the exact price required—a perfect human life for a perfect human life—no more and no less. Paul stated: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, a man, Christ Jesus, who gave himself a corresponding ransom for all.” (1 Timothy 2:5, 6) You have reason for hope then. If you accept Jesus’ ransom, you can be ‘set free from the law of sin and death.’ (Romans 8:2) Saved mankind thus has a new hope of life. It is a prospect of everlasting life, even as Adam originally had the prospect of living forever on a paradise earth.

I don't think I need to be "saved" in the first place. I'm good enough the way I am (imperfect, but good enough) and any god who would let me go to hell for the Christian reasons is not worthy of my worship anyway.
