What's his rank, how long has he been in, and what is is specialty?
Right now TSgt. CATM can cross train into things like paralegal, which deploys a lot less.
No job in the AF is safe. A friends huband is in services and he's been gone for 18 months. Another friend is a computer programmer, and a guy in his shop just left for Iraq for a year.
My hubby is SF and I'm prior SF, so ask away.

The USAF typically has 4 month deployments. Though the "typical" AF deployment was, at one time, 4 months, a 6 month deployment is really the norm now, with some of us get picked up for year-long tours.
As was said, there is no set schedule (as in, deploy for 4 months, at home station for 8). You go when and where they need you. Some career fields, specifically EOD, deploy so often, with so short of a break in between that it amazes me; a friend of mine deployed for 6 months, was back for 4 (meanwhile his wife got deployed to Korea), went back for another six, was back for 4 and just deployed again for a year.
Additionally, there is always training you have to go through before your deployment; length will depend upon what your deployment will entail. I was non-volunteered for a year long deployment to Iraq (no, they are no longer just for those that volunteer) and before we left we had close to 4 months of training, turning my 12 months away into more like 16.
If you are looking for the short and infrequent deployments, admin would prob be good. Frequent deployers: EOD, Security Forces, Intelligence, mechanics, air crew.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. :)

The USAF typically has 4 month deployments. There are exceptions to everything though and it depends on your career field. Most rotations do not send Airman longer then 179 days (Just enough to short change you from getting a short tour). To deploy longer then that requires a waiver to be signed by the Secretary of the Air Force. There are 4 jobs that are permenitly waivered and that is Weather, TACP, ParaRescue, and CCT. Since three of the four are male careerfields only, that shouldn't be a problem. When it comes to Weather, you will typically only see those only assigned to Army units get deployed longer then the 179 days. Still even in those cases, deployments are 6-9 monthes.
There are one year deployments in the Air Force, though last time I checked (6 monthes ago) they were volenteer only and the Air Force gave you the follow on assignment of your choice to move too after the deployment.

Nobody in the military deploys for "only" 4 months. They might have some 4 month deployments, but realistically, they're probably longer. And usually, if you're not deployed, there's other training exercises that will take you away for a little while, so no, you're not working a 9-5 the other 6 months of the year.

Currently the Army has the longest deployments active duty in Iraq is 15months, the Marines and Navy is 7months, and yes the Air force is 4 months. As to why I am not completely sure but my best guess is that AF personal are not used as much and thus the need for them is less which equals less time spent over seas. But also each services has different regs regarding deployment and this just could be the AF regs in action.

Become a C5 Loadmaster and you will never deploy. You'll be gone for about a week every month then home the rest of the time... at least until we get busy again.
Another job would be flight attendant they don't deploy either.

You are deployed for as long as they want. Many have been extended for months. It used to be the Air Force sent you TDY(temporary duty) for no more than 89 days concurrent. That has obviously changed with the requirements and decisions of the current administration.

Every single time I have deployed; I have been extended. So what started as a 4 month tour turned into 5+ month tour. No AFSC can guarantee you a four month tour.

Okay, don't believe everything you hear. Deployments vary on the unit that you are with and the mission they are sent to perform. It can be anywhere from 4 months to a year....it honestly just depends on your mission.

a deployment does not mean: gone for 4 months home for eight. a deployment can be as short as 30 days and as long as 18 months long, and there is no rhyme or reason as to how long you have between them. There can be as little as week between trips. and deployments do NOT count additional training that you may encounter which also means you will be away from your home base as well.
