No. Religion is based on emotions, and emotions have no rightful place in public government. The references of some commandments being turned into laws, such as "thou shalt not kill", well, that did prove kind of beneficial, as murder is unacceptable in religion, morality, ethically, and lawfully. In theory, elected officials should be running their offices based on society's rules, not their own personal beliefs. And in cases when a personal belief(s) would prevent the liberty and freedom of another person, well, sorry, we don't take kindly to people who try and take our freedoms away.

Has there in the history of the world ever been anything that has controlled society properly. Hell even now the main thing that controls society is money and look how jack up thing have become because of it. I don't think anything can really control society and do it justly.

And your Control is better ?

Immorality, Pornography, rape Robbery. Murder, Lying , Cheating, ect ect ect,

Oh I guess you like that Huh ?

Atheists' morals are not absolute. They do not have a set of moral laws from an absolute God by which right and wrong are judged. But, they do live in societies that have legal systems with a codified set of laws. This would be the closest thing to moral absolutes for atheists. However, since the legal system changes the morals in a society can still change and their morals along with it. At best, these codified morals are "temporary absolutes." In one century abortion is wrong. In another, it is right. So, if we ask if it is or isn't it right, the atheist can only tell us his opinion.

If there is a God, killing the unborn is wrong. If there is no God, then who cares? If it serves the best interest of society and the individual, then kill. This can be likened to something I call, "experimental ethics." In other words, whatever works best is right. Society experiments with ethical behavior to determine which set of rules works best for it. Hopefully, these experiments lead to better and better moral behavior. But, as we see by looking into society, this isn't the case: crime is on the rise.

There are potential dangers in this kind of self-established/experimental ethical system. If a totalitarian political system is instituted and a mandate is issued to kill all dissenters, or Christians, or mentally ill, what is to prevent the atheist from joining forces with the majority system and support the killings? It serves his self-interests, so why not? Morality becomes a standard of convenience, not absolutes.

But, to be fair, just because someone has an absolute ethical system based on the Bible, there is no guarantee that he will not also join forces in doing what is wrong. People are often very inconsistent. But the issue here is the basis of moral beliefs and how they affect behavior. That is why belief systems are so important and absolutes are so necessary. If morals are relative, then behavior will be too. That can be dangerous if everyone starts doing right in his own eyes. A boat adrift without an anchor will eventual crash into the rocks.

The Bible teaches love, patience, and seeking the welfare of others even when it might harm the Christian. In contrast, the atheists' presuppositions must be constantly changing, and subjective and does not demand love, patience, and the welfare of others. Instead, since the great majority of atheists are evolutionists, their morality, like evolution is the product of purely natural and random processes that become self serving.

Basically, the atheist cannot claim any moral absolutes at all. To an atheist, ethics must be variable and evolving. This could be good or bad. But, given human nature being what it is, I'll opt for the moral absolutes -- based on God's word -- and not on the subjective and changing morals that atheism offers.

A society should not be based SOLELY on religion...

I'm neither a religious fanatic NOR an atheist, but I think that religious ideas (like the 10 commandments) are a good guideline on leading a happy life and being kind to one another...

But when it gets too much into your head.. that's where the issue is

No, but it should not be barred from it either. The spiritual beliefs of the population should not be pushed out, because some do not believe. There MUST be compromise when there can be, and then other options when compromise can not be reached. An example, Stem cell funding. I don't want one cent of my tax money going to this butchery. However, privet firms that will be the ones to reap the financial benefit should be free to go ahead with it. That is a compromise.

"relgion control society"

not a good idea, not a wise idea.

"If we don't learn the lesson of history, are we doomed to repeat them?"

Some pretty smart people decided that this question was to addressed in the First Amendment to the US Consitution.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

the drafters ot the Consitution *knew* what they were doing.

Heavens No!

Look at the state of the world now with the amount of control religions already have! Your points exactly.

i assume you are an atheist. i dont need to answer this question, all anyone needs to do is study societies controlled by religion, such as spain during the inquisition, britain in the 15th and 16th centuries, much of the middle east at present and you will see that societies controlled by religion tend to be in the power of extreme fundamentalists who make stalin look meek. i dont believe many (sane) christians or moslems would like that

Humans were never meant to be controlled. When a human is controlled by another or others, physical maladies begin to manifest. The body is shutting down, committing suicide. We would rather die than to be controlled.

Lion, you speak untruths against your fellow man. You speak out of your ignorance and prejudice against those that think differently than you. Not everyone needs a god and hell hanging over them to be moral. I see where your problem lies.

hi,

i hope ye are fine,
There are 2 kinds of religion, but you could think about French revolution, and Inquisition....(Freedom of conscience?)

But in the Old Testament, when God ruled in Eden, And Abraham life, and the Patriarchs & Phrophets, then that was good....

7Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John chapter 10:7 >>
