The Catholic Church does not have an official ruling on the matter supposedly (it was recently in the news in fact), but the idea that was planted in the minds of Catholics was that nonbaptized infants (and this was then extended to include fetuses), go to "Limbo" (not "Purgatory"). Different theologians from the medieval times had different definitions of what Limbo was. The word means "border" and is depicted in Dante's Divine Comedy as the very border (the outermost) region of Hell. It is not depicted as a place of torment, though. The prevailing current view of Limbo, according to the Catholic Church is "a state of perfect, natural happiness but in separation from the divine presence of God." I think that the current official Catholic stance on the fate of the unbaptized--or anyone for that matter--is that it is not for ordinary folks to judge but left to God's grace and wisdom.

We trust the child to God's mercy. Since He is perfectly merciful, I assume this means the stillborn child goes to heaven.

Heaven.
The church used to state, if a child was not baptised it would go to pergatory with all the other "lost souls" They've reversed their position on this, and on pergatory in general.

Duh, its skull paves the road to Hell. Just like all the other babies who die unbaptized. That original sin is a killer. Too bad it makes absolutely no logical sense!
