Tell them they just called the scene of a homicide and this number has showed up on the caller ID numerous times, ask them what ties they have with the individual. Get their name and a direct phone # and tell them they will be contacted for questioning.

I once told a double-glazing telemarketer that I had just a bought a disused nuclear bunker which was undeground and had no windows.
I also told a credit card caller who opened with the line " And how are you today ?" that actually he had caught me at a bad time as I had just returned home from hospital after having my leg amputated.
You might also like to try saying that you are hard of hearing and he/she needs to speak up - they usually give up after you say "sorry, I didn't quite get that" for the fourth or fifth time.
And here's a tip if you get junk mail - don't bin it if it's got a return envelope. Rip up the literature (so they can't send it to someone else) and return it to them! That's recycling!

For me it depends on what they are trying to sell or if they are reading from scripts.
I like to use the approach I heard from a comedian which is "I was just about to commit suicide and you have 30secs to talk me out of it" Most of the time they hang up and never call back. I did try the hangup approach but didnt seem to work out well and even had one call back and try hanging up on me,4 times in a row.
Now I just say so and so isnt here would you like to leave a message and if they say no ill call back I tell them dont bother. Its pretty bad when you are getting calls and your phone is unlisted unpublished and on the DNC registery.

I once got a call about a great deal I can get for moving my home.
I told her that I would LOVE to move my home. My neighborhood was a slum and parking sucked. However, I said, I think my apartment manager would get awful upset if I took up the offer.
The tele-markerter hung up on me.

I don't answer the phone.
I get very annoyed when verizon calls me up to ask how my service is then proceeds to ask me 30 questions about it. They should know better. I mean the questions never stop.
I won't answer the phone. Its upstairs in another room, and I can't even hear it.

I often do! If they took the time to call me, I can take time out of my busy day to freak them out! ; ) haha My dad had a good one one time where the tele called and he put his hand over the phone and shouted "HEY! TELL THE COPS ILL STOP SHOOTING WHEN THEY DO!!!" then he said in a normal tone, "im sorry, you were saying?" hahahaha

I usually respond in a way similar to the scene in the 40 year old Virgin, if you're familiar with it.

I say, "I don't want _____, thank you." and hang up. I don't know why I say thank you, but it's ingrained, sigh. But I'm planning to get on the do not call list 'cause I HATE telemarketing calls. (And I DON'T want dish network, better long distance, the local paper....)
