The S5 IS has a larger sensor and fewer megapixels than the G9. Based on the article "The Pros & Cons of Pixel Packing" in the Nov. 2007 issue of Shutterbug Magazine (shutterbug.com) my vote goes to the S5 IS. Please take time to read the article before making your decision.

Have you considered taking one more step up and getting a DSLR?

Check out DPreivew.com They have the best technical reviews for digital cameras on the web.

I've owned the S2 IS, S3 IS, and a A710 IS. I really like the S3 IS and am seriously thinking of picking up the S5 IS.

The new SX100 IS also fits into the mix if you haven't seen that unit. It's body is fairly compact and would travel nicely in your coat pocket. The S5 IS definitely would require a camera bag.

One thing to consider is the refresh cycle between photos. The S3 is slightly faster than the S5, and I don't know how they both stack up against the G9. DPreivew.com will have that info though, so check them out.

If you are ready to waste your money for a cool gadget with bad image quality and not useful features Canon G9 is the best. For more details look through my article: http://fototramp.blogspot.com/2007/11/canon-powershot-g9-sd950-and-a650-can.html If you want to look like a pro and to have pour quality (such as G9) pictures it is better to pay attention at S5. To tell the truth, G7 and S3 are not the worse but cheaper. Nevertheless, Canon A630 with 1/1.8 inch 8MP sensor is much better. As for a little 4x zoom you can buy a Tele converter. Anyway, Canon Rebel Xti or even XT with not expencive zoom lens (not kit) is much preferable.

While both are capable cameras, the G9 is smaller and at times would be more convenient. Once you move to the s5, it seems that it would be more logical to spend a little more and get the versatility and capability of a dSLR.
