Yes.
I use the coal basket accessories which hold the coals to each side of the bowl, allowing indirect heat cooking with the lid on and a foil container of water below the meat.
The temperature is adjusted by adjustable air vents and the amount of charcoal used, so it is possible to braise the meat slowly at lower temps (275 degrees F) keeping the meat tender and juicy.
The thermometer in the lid is very accurate.
The rib rack also allows indirect cooking of ribs and chicken breasts by cooking the meat in a vertical position, allowing a much greater quantity of meat to be cooked at one time.

A lot of people do still.
People who have lower incomes use them too because they cannot afford the big propane grills with 2 racks.
I actually like the old fashion grills better. Everyone used them in the late 20th century.
