Fluffy is right. Do not baby him and don't give him affection for his fear, as that will teach him that his fear will get him attention.

As Cesar Millan would say, now is the time for you to be the pack leader. Always walk out the door ahead of your dog when leaving the house. This will show your dog who is in the leadership role. Don't get mad or frustrated and don't give him "assurance effection," just put him on a leash and lead him outside. Give him the attention for doing what you're asking him to, show him you are the pack leader and lead him. This will teach him that he can trust you and go where you go without fear. The pack will always follow the pack leader, whether they are afraid or not.

Puppies go through a couple of fear periods as they grow. Sometimes they seem like they're afraid of something they used to love for no reason at all.. Don't baby him or try to soothe him or anything. Take him outside on his leash if you think he needs to potty. Once he's done his business, instead of bringing him right back in, stay out there and play with him a bit. Give him some yummy treats. Make outside into a happy playful place again and he'll get over it.

You don't say what the virus is... was it due to something he came in contact with outside?

Also he is most likely not feeling himself yet do to the treatment and the illness.
Give him a little time to feel better and just let him out for his BIZ and bring him in where he feels safe and loved.

This will also help in a week or so to go outside with you.... cuz the trust is still in place.

Best of luck
