For the most part, we allow our riders to get out and experience most everything, but if there is an unsafe situation, they will be told to remain in the car. There is very little that could happen. I have been taking riders for over 14 years, and never put a rider in an unsafe situtation.
I would highly recommend to anyone who has the chance, to take advantage of a ride along. It gives you a different perspective of what police do, and how they do it. All my riders found the ride along entertaining, and most were quite surprised at how the real job differs from what you see on TV.

Yes, it can be dangerous. Even for reasons you don't think about. Our City just prohibited "ride alongs" due to an accident where the Sheriffs car went off the road and rolled over. The passenger was killed. Your hubby will be signing a paper that states the police department is not responsible for anything that happens while riding.

it sounds like he is just blowing off steam. he probably silenced his phone and thats why it was ringing all the way and then turned it off. Hes your husband, he loves you. I think that for your sake, he wont do it. I dont know the situation or anything tho. I would just wait and if he isnt back by tomorrow than call around more. Im starting to think that maybe you should call the police though because he just bought the gun and usually there are reasons for that. However, i think that he is fine because he said he would be back and normally if someone that was going to commit suicide wouldnt say that. Your in a tough situation. If I were you I would just wait, maybe go look around for him somemore.

ride-alongs are fun. i went on two of them. no worries. the SGT of the shift knows which officer has the ride-along, and if a situation appears to be too dangerous, most likely the police officer & your husband will get called off.

i am a police officer in the uk, i dont think that you should be worried because you husbend will not be put in any danger, it will be more of a fun day for him. if something serious happens they would drop him off in a safe area before attending the call. maybe suggest going with him, or go on one yourself!

I did a ride along in high school. I also have people who do ride alongs with me now. It is nothing to worry about. If a High School thinks it is safe for a kid to go i'm sure it will be safe for your husband.

I have been on a few ride alongs... they are fun.. he will be required to wear a bulletproof vest... but thats a given! He will have a blast. They will try, at best, to make sure he is out of harms way. let him go... and don't worry about him... think of how I feel... i have to let my boyfriend go out there each and everyday as a police officer....
Ok...seriously! How does this even constitute a thumbs down??? Give me a break!!

If they handle anything dangerous, they will drop him off before getting to the scene, and pick him up afterwards.

Ride alongs are safe. They aren't allowed to get out of the car, for one thing. Most officers who are killed are either killed while they approach a vehicle, while they arrest a suspect, or while they approach a house or other building - they aren't generally killed in their cars, so you shouldn't worry about your husband.
