My Brother has a 1 year old Airedale and he had been running off all the time so they got him a underground fence, now he is destroying everything he can find. He chews on everything, digs, and rips stuff apart. We have given him bones, and a soccor ball, and a big (horse size) jolly ball to play with. They have helped but it really just seems like he only doing it to make my brother mad. Any tips?

I am so mad at my Brother because I know it's his fault. He says that he doesn't even want to try anymore...that he hates the dog. He's trying to find him a good home. I love Baxter and wouldn't mind keeping him...he and my border collie could wear eachother down! He's an outside dog though and I can't afford to put in an under ground fence and I don't want to have him tied up all the time....I know that all he needs is more exercise and activiity and attention, My Brother is just so mad at him because of all the money he's cost him...he's chewed up some really exspencive stuff!

I would walk him myself only I don't have time. I'm a full time college student and I have 3 horses and a Border Collie of my own. We live on a farm. My dog and I don't actually go for "walks" we go out side and chase balls and a frisbee about 4 times a day for about an hour eachtime. (My mom & Dad do this also) If we had Baxt we could just play with the two dogs together and it wouldn't take much more time. If I have to drive down to my brothers and then walk Baxter it would take a lot of time and attention away from Wrangler. Do you think that he would stay at my house without being tied up once he got used to the place and found out that it was fun?

the dog needs more exercise..yeah i'd be mad at your brother too it sounds like he's not walking the dog. Can you walk the dog instead?
i mean, the dog isn't doing it to make your brother mad. he's a dog..he'd probably be better in someone elses care...

ADDED: oh i'm jealous lol..my dream is to live on a farm someday. (i have a border collie too).
I think your border collie would keep the airedale in your property! and yeah i think given enough attention by you and your fam, the airedale wont want to run away at all, that sounds like a better life than with your brother, and better for your brothers health too to not to be so angry.

Lots of exercise. Airedales are hunting dogs and are even used for search and rescue. They are an intelligent breed and need to be challenged. Crate training you Airedale may also help. It will give them a schedule of some sorts and some discipline.
I have a friend who owns an Airedale and he has told me since he has crate trained his dog, he has become more trainable over all. Dogs are going to chew, especially young dogs. Call the vet or check into information into good hard to destroy chew toys...also there are products out there to keep a dog from chewing things...like furniture or items outside.

Good Luck.

Goldens are friendly dogs, if they get the proper care and exercise. What you have is a golden puppy. It's not that he has issues, it's that he's not trained. Start taking him for long walks every day. He chews on things because he's bored. Make sure he has plenty of toys to chew on. Also, take him for obedience classes. Goldens are smart dogs, but they only become calm and obedient with time and effort.

He could be doing it just to make your brother mad. My dog pees on my bed when she's mad at me. (When I go on vacation).

You brother's dog might not be getting enough physical and mental exercise. Running away is a classic sign of limited physical exercise. As destructive behavior is a sign of boredom.

Make sure the dog has 6 different textured chew toys. Just cause you leave a bone, doesn't mean you dog will want to chew on something that hard.

Make sure the dog is getting plenty of exercise everyday, walks runs, dog park.

Work on training...this will stimulate the dog mentally. Also when you leave the dog alone, you might want to try a Kong filled with peanut butter or a buster ball filled with his kibble.

Chewing is also a way to reduce stress.

Lots of times a dog that is this destructive is very bored and just making up their own game. I would suggest a daily (or twice daily) walk for at least 45 minutes to get rid of some of this excess energy.

I had a puppy that developed a taste for "cords", I finally had to coat the power cords with hot sauce (put a little on a paper towel) because chewing on them could be very dangerous.

We had a similar problem, we now put our pit bull on a long leash, and pedal our bikes 3 or 4 blocks, then back daily. The dog loves the exercise, and it seems to calm him down. Any form of exercise with the dog should help. As he gets older his mischief should lessen also. Best to you.

he needs someone to spend time with him & show him love & affection. a happy dog does not destroy things. play with him, take him for a walk. or just let him hang out with you.
