Vista is the operating system of the future. Microsoft will, some day in the fairly near future, end support for XP. That will mean that there will no longer be any "Security" updates for it, just like there are none for Win98.
So, how good is Vista as compared to XP. As a computer tech, I use Vista. It is faster and much more stable then XP. I have been using Vista ever since it was first offered back in February and have had "no", and I mean no problems with it at all. I keep a second computer up and running XP in case that I need to look up an answer to a question for the forum. Every time I go back to XP I realize just how slow and unstable it really is. Vista does need a bit of tweaking before it runs the way you want it, but then so does XP. Also, Vista is getting better and better with every monthly upgrade and will probably settle down just fine when the first service pack is released early next year.
So, after using Vista for about 10 months now I can assert that Vista is far and beyond anything that XP has ever been.
One suggestion. Do not waste your money on Vista Basic. Use Vista Home Premium instead. If you want all of the bells and whistles, the go with Ultimate.

Windows XP SP2 is the best. Vista is very slow but as far as the look and feel is concerned Vista is far ahead. For Home use,and for a low end PC, XP is better. Most applications are compatible with XP and not to say about the Drivers that XP has.I have read in several sites that Not all Vista drivers are ready. So if you are comfortable with XP, better dont waste your money and time.

Computer professionals will continue to discredit windows vista for at least 2 years, until some of the bugs have been worked out. XP is better, but it is not the best operating system going. That would likely go to www.kubuntu.org as it is free, secure, and does not require a reboot upon updates.

I don't really understand your question. But in case you wanna know what to choose: I would recommend sticking with XP, esp. because SP3 is coming out soon, and there is still many problems with Vista.
