My boyfriend and I bought a crate for each of them. Are we supposed to keep them in there all the time, even when we are home? Should we feed them in there? We had pee pads down for them, but decided to take them away because we don't want them to get used to going indoors. We take them out regularly to use the bathroom. We are having a tough time because we try to put them in there at night and they howl. However, we do not want them ruining our home by pooping and peeing everywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know they are older dogs but they were never properly trained and we don't want them to ruin our house!!

No you're not supposed to keep them in there all the time. The crate's for training but first you have to train the dogs to enjoy the crate. There's a good website in the source bit. You're gonna have to potty train them all over again and that means taking them out every hour and giving them treats when they go outside. Of course they howl if they're in there all night, they're not used to it. You're gonna have to do a lot of training with them, old dogs do learn new tricks. Training them doesn't have to be a boring process though, make it fun and enjoy the dogs. They're older and wiser and that's a good thing (means they won't chew up all your stuff). Potty train them, then you'll have great dogs. Good luck.

It's never too late to train a dog. Crate training is a good plan. Keep the dogs in the crates when you are gone. The idea is that they don't pee where they sleep so they should hold it. They shouldn't be left alone for over 8 hours in there.
Every 4 hours that you are home let them out to pee. Once they have "emptied" you can let them have a run of the house for about an hour, or you decide depending on how they do. After a while they go back in the crate.

no the crate is more for when you are not home or bedtime. keep the dogs in the room your in. baby gates work great for this.
reg. outside trips are needed, and after feeding or rough housing. its just like training a pup and usally easier. catching in the acted is needed. (dogs don't understand rubbing their nose in it). A loud clap and AHHHTTTTT. or a noise you use for disapproval. take out at once.

if their not house broken well i'm gonna guess they need Obed. training. I would work on this as well, or start going to classes.

feed them where ya want if there is no food aggression then feedin them in the kitchen should be fine.

try putting the crate in you bedroom. this might stop the howling...they are easier to correct to.

I don't like pee pads honestly but some dogs need it they all learn differ. if i feel its not learning fast i will use one but have it by the door we go out( i had to do this with an older dog that even with going out lots still peed in the house he was 14-16.)

Hi, I had the same problem. Ok here is what really works, and in the long run you will find it very helpful! Ok Crates are a good idea to keep your dogs from being out of control. But if you want to train them to be house trained, there are some other things you must do first.

one go out a by a "clicker". clickers are some devices that make a clicking sound when you press it. Many trainers use the clicker to train their dogs as well.

Find some bells you can hang on your. Hang them on the door that leads to the outside, and everytime you take your dogs out ring the bells before you take them out to do their buisness. After a while your dogs will relaize that if they need to go out, all they have to do is rings the bells. and once your dog starts to nudge or ring the bells, you can use the clicker to praise them. Everytime they nudge the bells click the clicker and give them a treat. Your dogs will after a while recognize the sound of the clicker, and know that they did something good and that they will get a treat. After they have figured out the clicker, you dont have to use it anymore and your dogs will be house trained!

Don't leave them in the crate at all times. Just at night or when you aren't at home is fine. Just give them lots of love! When you are trying to potty train a dog, you have to keep a close eye on them at all times. This way, when you actually see them going potty in the house, you can yell NO really loud to let them know that thats not ok and then immediately take them outside. They will eventually get the hang of it. They will prefer to go outside rather than indoors where they live. It will take some time, but they will get used to it! Also, take them outside frequently to see if they do have to go, and if they go, give them lots of praise, even a treat if you want.

One thing: Be consistent. Continue taking them out routinely, but make sure they are going out enough. That's probably why the house-training hasn't taken.

And yes, you will want to crate them at night- at least until the training actually does take. Ignore them when they howl to be let out- unless it gets really bad. Then whack the crate with something like a rolled-up newspaper and tell them to be quiet. They'll get the notion.

Praise them when they do their business outside.

Don't expect instant results: You are working through 8 years of bad-to-nonexistant training after all. But if you're persistent, the dogs will learn to behave.

Good luck!

His gonads do not impression his capacity to be knowledgeable. i take income of this technique on each dogs that strikes in with me. schedule-Confine-Supervise schedule- the feeding and potty activities. An grownup is fed two times an afternoon. A dogs is fed 4 circumstances an afternoon as much as ten or 12 weeks, then three times an afternoon by utilising capacity of formative years. they must potty first element in the morning, final element at night time, interior a jiffy of each meal, and each few hours in between. The “in between” hours are calculated by utilising utilising their age in months: a million month = a million hour, as much as six months/hours. So, a three month historic dogs ought to be taken to potty each 3 hours in between the different scheduled circumstances. whilst the dogs/dogs is taken to potty, wait with him as he ‘does his commerce’ and then reward like loopy. The acquaintances ought to be geared up to take heed to you. Confine- the dogs or dogs each time it rather is not being watched. Confinement can be in a crate (particularly at night), an activity pen, or in the back of slightly one gate in an rather small and dogs-proofed room. Supervise- the pup or dogs each time it rather is loose in the abode. this suggests having eyes on it, now not on the television. Play with the pup, do a 5 minute education consultation, groom it, or only permit it lie at your feet with a danger-loose chunk, even nonetheless have it interior sight continuously. If it squats then supply a noisy “NO” or “ACK” as you scoop and run to the right potty spot. do not permit the dogs return to the twist of destiny spot till it rather is been completely wiped clean and then wiped with vinegar or a corporation enzyme product to do away with all urine smell.
