In Geourgia we are having a drought, so Governor Purdue wants to pray for water and now there are athiests planning to protest. I thought we had freedom of religion. I dont know much about the law but is this against the law? I want to understand why this is wrong.

separation of church and state, I imagine. The Governor's beliefs are his own private business, but in public office he should keep it to himself. Though I don't actually care that much, and if it works, you should lease him out to other states.

Wrong or right are relative terms. I don't agree with an atheist protest. I believe in the freedom of religion or non religion of each person, nevertheless in my opinion praying is a lost of time. Overpopulation and the abuse of natural resources is the real problem.

This is a good thing for the Governor to do...we are to pray for and pray with our leaders...
We have the National Day of Prayer where all pray for and with our government leaders and representative's...
This is stated in the Bible and unbelievers would have us not do what is right just so they don't get their feelings hurt...

All I am going to say here- atheists will try to do anything to stop Christians from praying- however, wouldn't it be awesome if one of those atheists actually saw that prayer answered. People can try to say it is separation of church and state, however, for any of us that believe in Christ, we cannot separate secular from the holy.
People down through the ages have tried to thwart God however, people will fade however God and His word will last forever

The US Constitution protects the right to freedom of belief and religion.
The governor's position comes from the same constitution, therefore it is a violation of his terms of service if he uses his position to promote a religion.

If he wants to pray for water, that's fine. If he is insisting that others do the same, he has crossed a line.
What he should be doing is creating a plan for conserving water and finding actual ways to get more water.
I would not want a governor who thought the solution to a crisis was just to pray that it gets better.

It isn't wrong for a theist to pray for rain. It is wrong for the Governor to publicize his prayer and get religious leaders to exalt religion in government. If he wants to pray, he should do it as a person, not as the governor like he is doing it currently.

Lets see, just as a start:
- as a representative of a secular government (supposedly) it is inappropriate (although he can do privately as an individual)
- it abdicates responsibility and distracts from actually doing something useful
- It calls his judgement into account

as an atheist myself, i have no problem with people wanting to pray. i do believe that false hope is just like it sounds, false. as long as it doesn't cost tax payer money to do this prayer then i have no issue with it at all but you do realize that the first amendment gives us the right to protest right? it may not be a big deal to you but it just remember to walk in other people's shoes once in a while.

Well, I would want my Governor to be working on making provisions for importing water sources and finding actual solutions to the problem. Not squinting his eyes and saying "Laverne & Shirley" three times backward.
