The police can only get involved if the teen is under the age of 16. I know cause I left my house when I was young, and my mom tried to get them to help her bring me back home, and they wouldnt.

Absolutely. You are underage so you will be returned. If you are running away because of some legitrimate reason such as you are being abused physically, mentally, or sexually you can go back and there are agencies that depending on your age will help you to petition the Court to make you an "emancipated minor". That would for all intents and purposes make you considered an adult with all the freedoms. but also responsibilities of adulthood. Why are you running away? Don't you have any relatives/family friends that would take you in if needed? Good luck. Running from problems is never the answer. You need to find some adult help and get some direction to help you solve the underlying problems.

From personal experience..
If you are 17 and younger and not in "state custody" meaning foster care or group homes sortve thing than YES they have to return you to your parents. The don't really look for you as much when your 17 though because your so close to the age of 18.
When your 18 and older it just becomes a "missing persons" sortve thing which they investigate and if its something serious and they feel your a danger to yourself or others than it becomes a active look out if its deemed that your "ok" they don't look actively but if your name was runned while say you were pulled over or what ever they'd only have to report that your truly okay but wont force you to go anywhere.

Yes, the police will return you home, even if you go out of state.
How old is this possible runaway and why are they thinking about running away?
Tell this person to speak to an adult that they can trust, or find one...

Yes they can, they can even bring you back into the country if they find you. The only way to get around that is if you were gone until you turn 18, then they cannot charge you with anything.

Yes, they can. And if you cross state lines, the FBI can force you to return home.
