Five bridesmaids, a maid of honor, and a marton of honor... I know, supposed to just have a maid or a matron, but I want both. :) I'm having a very large wedding in a large church. Four friends, three cousins. I have no sisters and neither does he, but several brothers who need bridesmaids. The more the merrier!

I just had a maid of honor and 2 bridesmaids (3 total) but in hindsight, I could have/should have included two other girls in the party - but not necessarily. My maid of honor was my best friend from elementary school who had still been in touch with me and supported me as I went through college and started working away from our town. My bridesmaids were my sister and my husband's sister. My husband really only wanted to have three groomsmen and the entire wedding was only about 100 people, so a wedding party of 8 total was a good number. If your wedding will be massive, having more people is fine, but you need to consider the budgets of your attendants and know that most people will understand that the choice is yours, because you can't put everyone in the wedding party. Actually, the more attendants you have, the more people will wonder why they did not make the cut! So keeping it small has its advantages.

I'm having 5. I maid of Honor, 4 bridesmaids. I think it's helpful for the people you choose if you have at least 3 because theres more people to help with the shower and other bridesmaid responsibilities.

As it seems like the average answer here--I had 4.

I had my sister, my cousin (i have a small family and only have 2 first cousins--the older one is nearly 40 and her daughter was my flowergirl), and 2 best friends that I've known forever.

My husband is an only child but has a lot of close friends. He wanted more, but we decided on 4 groomsmen and had 2 ushers.

I have 2 weddings next year--my sisters and my cousin. My sister is not having any, just the 2 of them up at the alter. My little cousin has no idea yet--right now she's limited it to something like 6-8 people she is really close to.

I went to a wedding recently with 13. And that is ridiculous. It looked like she had her entire sorority up there. I think a bridesmaid is someone who is important enough to stand up there with you on your big day. If you have so many that you have "honorary" ones that are sitting in the pew, don't! Don't place every best friend you ever had up there when you haven't spoken to them in 5 years. But obviously some compromises must be made so that you don't hurt feelings (like asking all but one of your sisters). No matter whether you decide to have just one sister up there or all 5 of your sisters--I think a lot of it depends on the size of the church, the size of your family, the formal atmosphere of the wedding, and how many people you truly imagine having to be there. After all, it's YOUR day!!
