hi bettie-i have a boss-he goes out on missionary trips at least once a year to spread the joys of christ-he does this with profits from the restaurant-sounds like he does a lot of good maybe-unless you are one of the college kids or high school kids working there and being paid less than minimum wage[remember the mcdonald bill] and trying to earn money-i also get to hear how ungrateful they are for the work they have and how lazy they are-----not sure what is gained i guess

I have a friend that's has done a lot of missionary work. She does not do much of the converting stuff but feels that God helps her helps other people.
LOL I have to tell you though once she and her hubby (who she met through missionary work) were asked by the church to do some work in what she called the slums of the Philippines.( She is Filipino, so I guess she would know) Her duty was to talk about birth control with the families of this areas. Problem was they were Catholic and very old school Catholic. LOL I laugh when she tells me she prayed "Please God don't send me there" Finally as a last resort she told her hubby (who would have been doing agriculture work) "If you take that position you are on your own" Needless to say they both decided it was time to pack up and come home (to the states).

Teaching people the truth about God.

For Jehovah's Witnesses, missionary work can be in far away lands or in their own "back yard" so to speak lol. But its having a sole focus of placing Kingdom Interests first.
When the Kingdom is such a priority the person too enjoys a much closer relationship with God, a better understanding of the Bible, and better skills using the Bible.
And for missionaries in far away lands, there's the added element of the "exotic and unknown"... I would LOVE to be a missionary in South America or Africa. People always bring back such wonderful, faith-building experiences (and more than a few awesome pictures lol).

Missionary work includes building wells so communities can have fresh water
Providing school supplies and shoes for kids in poverty stricken areas
Many charities use the funds for examples such as the above
and ofcourse the selfish gain is that you feel good helping humanity even at a small scale
=)

Missionary work isn't all throwing Bibles at people. A lot of missionaries are teachers, doctors, nurses, etc. They give people food, help them find shelter, work with the poor and underprivileged, etc. I've worked with missionaries both here in the U.S. (inner city L.A.) and abroad (Thailand) and what I've done has never been just telling people they're going to Hell. I know some missionaries are like that, but in my experience it's much more of a feeding the hungry, healing the sick, helping the needy type of deal.

That would depend a great deal on who is doing the missionary work. Some insist that people "convert" before actually helping. Some help simply because it's the right thing to do.

Well, other than converting and winning over souls for Christ (the most important work of all), there is the aspect of it in which the missionaries help those in need and try to make their living conditions better, etc.

Having love for your fellowman and the sense of accomplishing Jehovah God's will. God says that he loves a cheerful giver. So make sure your motives are pure to help others. Also, you'll be giving hope to others who live in this world and helping them to know the truth about God.

Well, proselytizing aside, most missionaries are there to help build villages, educate the people, build wells, help the sick, etc.

Charity and love for our neighbors...

If the people ask why then perhaps they can go into the particulars but it should be about helping.

People get to hear about Jesus! They also get to see God's love in a person. Mission work is so important, what other religion goes to another country to help the needy?
