Polio was a big issue in the 50's! Those it didn't kill often crippled. Thank God for vaccinations. I remember as a little girl in the 60's getting the medicine on a sugar cube to prevent polio and had numerous friends in leg braces.

Leg braces were used for several different reasons. Polio being one of them, also to try and correct leg deformities, twisted muscles and bones. Feet turning in or out. There may be more I'm sure. Medicine has come a long way.
