Yes, for those of you with the grossed out faces, dogs should have their anal glands drained. Anyways, I noticed my cat was scooting on the floor the other day like a dog with an itchy butt; which was quite amusing. Should it be ignored, should we take him in to get checked for something, or does his butt need to get drained???

Yes, but its not as common in cats as it is with dogs.
I have 6 cats, and ONE of the 6 has occasional anal gland
problems. I would have it checked.

If you know how to do it yourself, be for warned that they smell ALOT worse than any dog! lol

IF its NOT the glands bothering her, it could also be worms causing her to itch. Tapeworms, caused by fleas do not always show up on stool tests. So it wouldnt hurt to have her wormed for tapeworms if you find out its not her glands, and you have recently had a fecal check that was negative.
Talk to your vet.
Good luck.

EDIT:

Here is a very good web site that may help you understand that some cats can and DO have anal gland problems.

Hope it helps.

Cats Anal Glands

Actually, when cats do that it's a symptom of round (or Pin-) worms. You can get some Earlyworm and follow the directions, or take the cat to the vet's.

Cat's anal sacs do not need to be expressed, but on occassion they can become impacted, and an abcess may form around the anal area.

I've had cats for years, and never seen an anal abcess, so I would assume it's not particularly common.
Of course, many people don't even see abcess or other health problems in thier animals, or misinterpret what they do see, as you have done here.
Treat the worms and the scooting will stop- the worms cause intense itching in anal area.

cats have anal glands. For the most part cats don't need any help in that area, but if the cat is overweight, or having problems, then a manual expression would be in order.

Itchy butt might be anal glad issues, might be worms. Take him in, see the vet, and do a fecal (bring in a stool sample) too to be on the safe side

One of my cats has had an anal gland infection - maybe twice in his sixteen years. Another cat (14) scoots pretty regularly to relieve her glands. My cats have never had them "drained" routinely. The action of passing stool is supposed to keep them from becoming impacted.
