From your information, your friend is a qualifying relative type of dependent. If she were a full-time student, she would be a qualifying child if she were living with a parent, uncle, aunt, or sibling. But she is not a qualifying child for you.

The only tax benefit you will receive by claiming a qualifying relative dependent is the $3,400 dependency exemption. Your filing status is unchanged, you do not qualify as head of household even though you pay the household expenses.

If you owe taxes, then your taxes will be reduced by your tax rate x 3,400. For example, if your tax rate is 15%, your taxes will be reduced by $510.

You have to prove with three different tests that she can qualify as a dependent.
1. Dependent taxpayer test.
2. Joint return test.
3. Citizen or resident test.

Remember, a spouse is NEVER considered your dependent.

It is a sticky thing to claim your girlfriend, and a BIG audit flag. So really read up on the tax laws before you consider claiming her.

The amount of the deduction will vary greatly on the amount you make.

Depends on your tax bracket. In a 15% bracket, you'd save $510 in tax, 15% of the exemption of $3400 for 2007. Claiming her as a dependent would NOT qualify you to file as head of household.

It depends on how much you make and how much they have taken out but be careful because if her parents carry her you can be audited. You must be able to show that you have taken care of her. She is not your wife so you may need to call a place where they do taxes like H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt.

a dependent will save you about 15-25% of the exemption amount of about 3,400 so maybe 510-850.

You'd better be careful. A lot of people try to claim boyfriends/girlfriends as "dependents" so this is a flag to the IRS.
