When I speak through writing, I feel as though it is not I who is doing the communicating...thus, I would say I am not thinking. The words often just flow/fly out my fingers. If I am speaking verbally, I'm finding that I am more & more sensitive to the other or to the situation. However, I have a long way to walk before I can claim "thoughtfulness" in speech, because I still have moments that trap me in an emotional response. This forum is so excellent for holding a mirror up to myself. Sometimes I feel as though I am in a confessional, even if only with myself. Thanks, Digi... I am Sirius
P.S. As to rude, uncalled-for answers, the more respectful we all are to one another, the more we will be able to "hear" another's viewpoint, and perhaps integrate helpful information into our own perspective. I am always interested to meet others who appear to be "different" from myself. I feel I expand in this way. Too, although we are all one, we come in an incredible variety of packages. We have much to share with one another. Blessed be.... still Sirius

I tend to speak without thinking when i am angry or hurt (in life, not on YA). We yell and or speak without thinking to be understood, not to be right. Somehow we think that speaking louder or with a lashing tongue forces people to understand our point of view or feelings. I have learned that we certainly get a message across this way but it is rarely the one we wanted to be heard by the other.
When we speak kind words of love we should speak from the heart, all other times it would be wise for us to speak from the most rational part of our heads (not the overflow from our emotions).
Hugs back to you!

I hardly ever speak/write without thinking. I used to do this quite a bit when I was a few years younger and recognized, thankfully, how little authority I had after communicating this way. I always try to 'check my intention at the door' so that I don't harm others. I can say something firmly but still respectfully and without insulting another person. They might not like my position but we at least have an opportunity to have dialogue about it. Namaste

I have a problem in this area, for I sometimes speak before I think. I have prayed that the Lord will help me to be a quick thinker and slow speaker. A person should just be very carefull that you are not so straight forward that you become rude. There is a very fine line that devides straight forward and rude.
What do you think about this .....
FIRST, LETS LOOK AT HOW IMPORTANT THE TONGUE IS.
A. THE TONGUE DETERMINES OUR ETERNAL DESTINY.
"But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned" (Matthew 12:36-37).
1. Words are extremely important, in fact, so important that according to Jesus they determine our destiny.
2. Our words will either justify or condemn us. Think about it. This same law is common to man. A man is judged to be guilty or not guilty based on testimony, that is, by his words.
a. If we use ugly, dirty, filthy, angry, spiteful, gossiping, grumbling, and murmuring words, then we are in trouble. In the end, these words will testify against us and condemn us in the day of judgment.
b. On the other hand, if we use kind, gracious, loving, edifying, and profitable words, then in the end, these words will testify for us and justify us in the day of judgment.
3. So how important are our tongues? They determine our eternal destination.
"He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin" (Proverbs 13:3).
4. May we all guard our tongues, so that we will obtain eternal life.
B. THE TONGUE EXPOSES WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE WE ARE.
"You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him" (Matthew 12:34-35).
1. Jesus says that our words expose our heart…it tells what kind of person we are.
2. Our words expose one of three things about us. We either have the heart of a viper (v. 34); a heart of an evil man (v. 35); a heart of a good man (v. 35).
3. You see, our words expose our true nature…what lies beneath the surface…what is deep down within our heart…our motives, desires, and ambitions. Our words expose our true character: whether good or bad, kind or cruel.
4. Listen to what James tells us in (James 1:26):
"If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless."
Yes a person can do a lot of damage by speaking to quickly.

Yes I have. My husband says I am bad to do this. I will put something a certain way and think it came out right, until he tells me that it didn't sound good. So I have to go and make it right.

I try to think before I speak....sometimes however I speak and then think. So right now I am trying to learn the wisdom of shutting my trap and not reacting. Trying to learn to think (or observe the thinker which is more accurate) then ACTING. I am not always successful but I try and will continue to try.

I speak honest truth, some people don't like that because it challenges their perception of reality.
but I always say if something is wrong with reality, whatever's wrong is not reality.
