Most people don't truly believe, but instead believe in the belief itself. Very few truly believe their scriptures to be true, that's why you have so many people who say that they believe, but don't actually follow the scriptures.

Absolutely no doubts whatsoever. After being raised without any particular religion, my mind wasn't brainwashed as a child so I was very open-minded to everything. However, after studying the Bible for years on my own--and talking with several pastors and ministers as well as other Christians and atheists--when I DID go out in search of a church, I found that most all of them could hardly answer any of my questions. And when they did answer, it sounded so ridiculous, I knew it wasn't true because they couldn't explain it without some sort of hesitation.
I found their doctrines to be contradictory to the major portions of Christ's teachings because they tended to focus on just one verse of scripture, and interpreted the meaning from that one verse alone instead of looking at the whole scenerio or context.
This whole bit about the Holy Trinity sounded so ridiculous, I wondered how any sensible person could believe it; no wonder there are so many atheists! The traditions of modern day Christianity were brought about by men who debated and argued over the scriptures, picked out the ones they wanted and tossed out the rest. This mainly happened at the Council of Nicea in 325 AD and again in 787 AD. Do you think they had the Spirit of God and were led by this Spirit? I think not; in fact the apostles warned against this very thing because the church was beginning to corrupt from within because of all the debating and men being led astray by the doctrines of these other theological philosophers that were spreading their own versions of Christ's teachings in order to draw disciples unto themselves. The apostles prophesied of the downfall of the church because of men following their OWN desires instead of living by the spirit (which was only given to members by the laying on of hands of one with authority AFTER they were baptized). The importance of this authority is important or Paul wouldn't have rebaptized those men who believed in Christ, but were baptized by one without this authority:
Acts 19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7 And all the men were about twelve.
To make a long story short, I eventually was led to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and because I was open-minded and sincerely searching, I was able to really listen to what they had to say--I wasn't brainwashed, I wasn't forced--but I DID go and ask my Father in Heaven about the things I had heard--and Iet me tell you, unless a person is humble enough to accept GOD'S will instead of his own, then he will NEVER experience the feeling that comes over you when the Spirit witnesses truth to your heart.
If you go in with the attitude of "Hey, those people are crazy whackos" then you are not sincerely seeking because you are filled with the spirit of doubt, self-pride, contention and judgment; and these things are not of God.
I WILL say that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was the ONLY church that could answer every single question I had, and in a way that made sense.
So, if everyone else wants to believe that God, Jesus, Christ, and the Holy Ghost are all one person that can split apart and manifest themselves as three different beings, then more power to them.
But ask yourself this: IF we are CHILDREN of God, and Christ SAID that we TOO are gods because we are the OFFSPRING of God, and we were made in HIS image--then we look like Him, right? Doesn't that make sense? All things reproduce in their own likeness; this was patterned after the order of heaven because all things here already existed spiritully, before they were even created physically:
Eccl. 1: 10
10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was BEFORE us.
Sometimes, we're unable to learn and accept things because we're so filled with traditions that have just been blindly accepted for generations.
BTW, only babies, children, and those who are incapable of making decisions for themselves, can be brainwashed because they're easily influenced and are controlled or under the authority of adults. Adults who function well in society, and are mentally and emotionally capable of making decisions in their everyday lives, cannot be brainwashed because they are able to think on things and base their judgments and actions on facts.
