I moved to Sydney from Birmingham(U.K) last October and have been working fulltime since. When I left the UK I owed some money on my laptop that I gave to my exGF and she promised to take care of the money I owed on it (about £387) but she didn't, so the bank (HFC bank a part of HSBC group) have been sendin me claim letters for the past 6 months because I have an active current account with HSBC, UK and they have my address in Australia. However the letters arrived too late for me to take any serious notice about paying the debt off. (like 10 days past the 'pay by/contact us' date)

Recently they sent me a letter saying my account has been transferred to a firm of debt collectors in Australia. Would this affect my credit rating in Australia?

OK, without lecturing to you I will simply answer your question.

Yes you are responsible and yes it will hurt your credit.

Of course! YOU contracted for the debt and remain responsible for it.

Your comment about receiving the notice too late to take any "serious notice about paying" leads me to believe that you have the intellect of a roo at best. Maybe a wallaby, but certainly not someone who should be allowed access to money or credit.

Pay your damn bills!

It shouldn't because Australia has its own credit regulations and borrower rights. Your credit agreement should be subject to British regulations even if your lender hires debt recovery services in Australia.
