There are many different psychoses. Schizophrenia is not a single disease but a spectrum of disorders. That spectrum includes at least several psychoses. There are other psychoses than the schizoid type for example bi-polar disorder.

For a full account of the symptoms and criteria that a psychiatrist needs and uses in diagnosing these disorders type in "DSM-IV TR" in Yahoo! web search to access the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition revised. This is put out by the American Psychiatric Association. For a more succinct summary type in "schizophrenia" and "Bi-polar disorder." A number of links comes up in all cases. Wikipedia has good summaries.

This is the right place to say this for in my experience the public understanding of these disorders is usually wrong, misinformed and misunderstood. Be sure you carefully study the information in these links to fully get a familiarity with the disorders.

Good luck, good mental health, peace and Love!

The symptoms can be similar. The difference comes in the diagnosis. There are both positive and negative symptoms for schizophrenia. Positive symptoms include visual or auditory hallucinations and delusions; negative symptoms include: apathy, inability to concentrate, being withdrawn. Psychosis is a break from reality and can include some of the same symptoms as schizophrenia and can include such things as thoughts jumping around very quickly and becoming incoherent.

It's when in internal influence, such as a voice in your mind, tells you what to do and makes you believe you have superior powers over the rest of the world. It's a sad disorder and maybe can be controlled by medication.
