In a way, this is so. A woman tried to do this to me after her ex-mate preferred me over her. In revenge, she sought out my circle of friends and began a disinformation campaign against me, spreading lies that made the friends avoid me. I am long since over it, but the friendships are gone. I do not blame those who listened, but if they followed subsequent news of the gossiper, they will know her true nature and realize their error. I have no vested interest in whether they do or not; the affair is dead to me.
Things like this can poison the waters, though. It is important to discern whether you are being treated in a standoffish manner due to some gossip that may be unknown to you. Then the air can be cleared.
An anecdote: I saw a young man who I've known for a couple of years, and I obtained service at the counter where he worked. When filling out the form for the service, he asked me my last name and acted strangely towards me. I, however, realized immediately what this was--an article about my husband erroneously listed him as single, and this man had read the article. This young man assumed I was divorced from my husband now and he felt discomfort because he wasn't sure what to use as my "new" last name. I cut through the bull and told him the article was false (in a humorous way so as to put him at his ease.)

The Biggest Lie I have ever heard is the ole saying "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"
Consider this verse.
Jam 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
Jam 3:6 And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
Jam 3:7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
Jam 3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Yeah, unfortunatley you can. C.Lewis made a comment" if you take from me that which does not make you greater but makes me lesser you are truley a thief indeed". I may have that messed up a little but you get the jist of it.
just think of the guy that is talking to his best freinds girl when he goes to the bathroom and he really is not trying to make a pass, but brings up an old event that happened to the two of them and he expounds on it but was not there. He has just buried his buddy's relationship and did not even know the facts but spread the "hearsay" about something that may or maynot have happened and it was years ago.
God Bless!

I suppose if you spread vicious rumors about someone and it totally affected their life then perhaps they might consider suicide. Or maybe if the rumor was so bad that it caused someone else to want to kill them. Just don't gossip.
