Why do people take bibles from hotels? The fact that they are stealing bibles makes it pretty likely they're Christian, so they're committing a sin. What the heck's up with that?

I said LIKELY to be Christian. As you'd see if you read it properly. I didn't think everyone who steals them is religious. Eeesh.
We don't have Gideons. What are they? Our Resort has to buy our own bibles, which are NOT there to be taken...

I am Christian. And you have a good point.
I like to think the people who take the Bibles are atheists who have seen the light. But need some work on their honesty.
Better yet, I think Jesus saves^^^has the best answer.

I would suggest that most people who take a bible from a hotel are NOT Christians. Most Christians already have their own bible...and most that want to read it on a trip are already traveling with their own bible...why would they need to steal one. In addition, most Christians are aware that a large number of churches and other organizations will GIVE them a bible if they just ask.
The way I see it, two types of people are the "most likely" candidates for stealing bibles. The first group are the ones that steal because they think it has value...that they'll be able to sell it to someone if only for a few bucks. The second group are people that are actively hostile toward the bible...they're stealing it because they think they're keeping others from being deceived by its words or just to make some kind of protest against it being placed in their room! They don't keep the bible they steal, they throw it in the trash.
Gideon's is an organization that provides bibles for hotels (and others)...no charge to the hotel. They are also the ones that hand out mini-bibles for free to people at various events (for example, Gideon's gave everyone at my university...well, everyone that wanted one...a copy of the NT (plus Psalms and Proverbs) at my college graduation ceremony (...and no, it wasn't a Christian school). I have two or three copies of Gideon's bibles around my house that I collected during my college days.

The Bibles are placed in motels by a group called the Gideons who do that sort of thing. If you would open one of the bibles up (it won't hurt you I promise!) you will see in most of them there is a disclaimer stating that it was placed there by the Gideons and if you need a bible then go ahead and take it. The Gideons want these bibles to be taken, that is the whole idea. So looking at it that way, a person wanting to take it for reading purposes is not stealing it. And if people are taking them for other purposes (out of spite or whatever) then that is their own problem and something they will have to answer for one day.

Yes and the likelihood of them being a Christian is slim as most Christians actually have their own Bibles.
The Gideons who put Bibles in hotels recognise than some will get stolen, but if the person has a genuine need for one then they regard it as a gift.

I have never heard of anyone taking a Bible from a hotel. Besides that, the Bibles are placed there for free by an organization that wants the Bibles taken... which hardly equates to stealing.

Contact the Gideons on the Net. They will be more than glad to ship some Bibles to your resort.

If you must know I am a Christian and I have never stolen a bible from a hotel. Its really something that you assume that, that person MUST be a Christian Stealing. Its like you are looking for Christians to do wrong. What you can't sleep until you see a CHRISTIAN do wrong?. Shows alot about your character.

It is one of the 10 commandments and yes, it is a sin. Nobody has an excuse for sinning but of course when we do something wrong we are meant to ask for forgiveness from God.
Christians are not immune from sinning, they are human, living in the flesh and are bound to do something wrong like anyone else, the only difference is that we have the Holy Spirit living in the inside of us who convicts us of our sins and if we listen to Him, we can repent of our wrong doing.

I take your half finished question for answering.
Stealing is not a sin if it is for your and your dearests' survival. Food and medicines are something that you must have for your survival. But the law and common belief does not agree with me. If it is a sin, you do not have to regret about that sin. This is my view only and need not be correct.

Funny you should ask this question. I heard on TV that people have turned their lives over to the Lord after they stole the bible.
