The cashier asked me if I was interested in a Target credit card. I decline but when I later check my receipt, in big bold letters it said, "Pre-Approve!" with my name under it.

Why would Target have my credit info? I never filled out an application for a credit card.

I noticed she didnt ask my sister.....

If it is on your receipt and you can prove your identity (which matches what is on your credit report) then you "are" approved.
(and if the cashier/customer service person codes it correctly when entering it)

The Target pre-approval on the receipt is a "true" pre-approval. It is not like the general pre-screened or pre-approvals that companies often send in the mail where you have to apply and possibly get approved or denied based on your credit report.

They often track the credit or debt card you use when you shop there and/or if they had ever swiped your drivers license, then they have your info to pull a soft promotional inquiry which they based that pre-approval on.

Congrat's if you go for it and I hope you get the Visa.

You actually have two things going on.

The first is that Cashiers at most chain stores are REQUIRED to ask if you want to open up a credit card. In fact a lot of time the cashiers get paid for every account that they attempt to open. If the cashier thought you were together, once she asked you she probably just did not ask your sister.

The second is with the receipt you got was just what it said you were "Pre-Approved". In your case you probably paid by way of a credit or debit card. So the system figures if you have a credit/debit card already you have a good chance of getting approved for their card. However, they do not actually check your credit report until you follow the instructions on the receipt and enter in/give your personal information. This is random, it does not print out on every receipt

Oh my, what a new come-on?!? LOL, Target has you targeted, for sure. This is an attempt to get you to take out a credit card you don't want or need. Pre-approved means a limited amount of credit, usually with a high interest rate. Continue to decline. The only thing that can tell you if you are "credit worthy" is a credit report. You can get an annual free credit report once a year that tells you everything you need to know about your credit.

I get those all the time in the mail and you are credit worthy. I checked my report recently and it said I was first noticed by them in 1986. I had been working since 1975 and I had credit then too. Not until I got my first credit card in, guess when, 1986! Even though I was married and HE had credit, I was invisible till I got that card in MY NAME. And I kept it paid, never late, always pay more than the minimum. They call me a FREE-LOADER cause I never pay interest. I don't have to. I get them all the time.

The above person has no clue as to what she is talking about.

Rather than simply mailing credit card offers to everyone with an address, banks try to target their customers directly. They want consumers who are more likely to respond, qualify for a card, and become profitable customers.

More than likely you have good credit and thats why Target wants you!
