I don't know what that movie is about, I spend less time watching TV and movie trailers lately.
I'll look it up real quick though and give you my best guess.
Here is the web page I found explaining it:
http://www.christianpost.com/article/20071031/29901_Christian_Groups_Claim_Religion-Purged_%5C'Golden_Compass%5C'_Movie_Promotes_Pro-Atheism_Books.htm

In the story, a malevolent governing body called "the Church,” which answers to the "Vatican Council," is known to kidnap children for experimentation. With the help of a golden compass that reveals a coded answer to any question asked by the user, Lyra, by the trilogy’s end, gets to the bottom of the missing children and kills a character called “God.”

Thats a quote from the site, I think the main thing is the bad guy is specifically made out to be religion, and while for some they can seperate it, for most it will weaken their faith, especially if they like the movie or they relate to the movie, which is the point of most movies or books - this is coming from a writer, so I know.

"It undoubtedly makes people question, but inspires them to look harder for more authentic religion," said Craig Detweiler, co-director of Reel Spirituality, a pop culture and religion think tank at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif, according to FOX News. "Pullman takes license in pointing out the scary, false gods and destructive idols we've created. In that sense, I think he's doing a great service."

Another quote ^
I think that it depends on the person, as I have said all along regarding media, but that the movie will most likely promote the book and the book, more than the movie, pushes against God, or quite possibly against false Gods, but personally I think that will be harder to see.

The point of the movie is that religion has been taken out, which will make fans of the book cringe and personally I think it ruins the movie when you stray that much from the book. Fans are complaining about that, and I suppose they thought it would make christians happier about the movie, but they were wrong, simply because the movie will promote the book. I would not suggest to any "young christians" young in their faith not in their age, to go see this movie, but I might see it just to recomend against it or to defend against it. I have always had a strong grip on reality in movies.

Appearently the Author has said that he despises the Narnia series of books, which I find funny because Narnia is more for religion, big time, and these books seem to be against religion, I just wanted to point out that it seems to be a funny coincidence.

Fiction is a great way to push your objectives onto people and for them to not know that your doing it, because its fiction they let the ideas creap in, then when they hear them later, they are already in their heads and connoted with warm feelings and the joy of seeing a good movie.

I don't have a strong stand on the movie, as I said I hadn't heard of it before today, it lookes good as most movies of that genra do, but the anti-God themes apaull me.

They are not they are destroying it! The violence goes back to a dispute over who had spiritual authority over the Muslim community after the death of the prophet Muhammad in what is called the “fitna” which translates as temptation or trial and caused all the discord within Muslim community. Shi’ite Muslims believe that authority was vested in his family; the Sunnis look to the sayings and actions of Muhammad as well as the Koran. The extreme sectarian violence has been brought about by Al-Qaeda Which while being exclusively Sunni deliberately set Shi’ites and Sunnis to kill each other in Iraq. Sadly more muslims die by muslim hands each month than were killed by the invading forces in the war! Hamas also kills far more muslims than the Israelies ever have! An average of over thirty five muslims a week were being killed by muslims but in the last few years it has frequently been over a hundred a week! Whether it is a Danish Cartoon, book of fiction , a snippet of film or some other excuse, Muslims hit the streets around the world rioting, looting, burning and uttering death threats! Nearly all the muslim countries are seeing muslims attack muslims destroying homes, businesses, infrastructer and targeting women and children particularly showing the extremists must surely be trying to turn muslims into primitives living in caves and mud huts so they can be controlled more easily!

Not sure, but I know a great many people who never saw the Chronicles of Narnia because it was advertised as a Christian movie. I knew the stories inside and out since I was a child and disagreed greatly. That's just me though.

There are many Christians who are afraid of things that are not specifically Christian, things that support a view that witchcraft and demons are fun and good. They also don't want to support these things because they beleive that movies like this influence people, kids especially, to think of the dark side as fun and friendly.

I understand their fear and concern, but I don't agree with their methods. Speaking evil of such things is only bringing more attention to them. And when people go see these movies and do not see anything harmful in them it only convinces them that the "religious people" are very misguided and should not be paid attention to.

No. I agree that the movies make light of evil things but I also believe that there are good ways of dealing with these movies.

You can do what you want to......it's your life.

Is reading books or watching movies really going to undermine your faith?

I think it's the same sort of garbage that was going on with the Harry Potter books. The world is a crazy place.

I honestly had no idea this movie was even being made until Christians began making a huge fuss about it here. Now, I can't wait to see it.

Twice.

I'm not a christian and I'm not going to see it. Just from the looks of the trailers, it really doesn't trip my trigger.

People say it's anti-religion so it should be banned, just like Narnia and Veggie Tales promoted their beliefs...but weren't boycotted, hmm.

Thanks for being a real American, too, standing up against censorship.

They're afraid of anything that shakes their weak beliefs. You have strong faith, so you're not afraid. The fundies are saying it's an anti-Christian film.

Enjoy it!
