You have answered your own question: You think anything to do with God is 'illogical'. If you open your heart and mind you will realize that God has been with you all along. As far as the old stories go: Yes, the old testament was written a long time ago, and some of the stories aren't as 'exciting' as others. Actually to a person just trying to learn about God the old testament is somewhat confusing. I would start reading the new testament starting with the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). In those you will read about Jesus' life while He was on earth, his resurrection, his promises, etc. The old testament will make more sense to you then. Also, get a version of the Bible that is easier to read (if you are new at it), like the NIV or New King James. They translate the Bible into language that is easier for a person just starting out to understand.
You can also try finding a good church that interests you (with a good preacher, etc.) sometimes it's easier to 'listen' to the word than it is to read the word.

No you are not condemned. Try getting a bible with modern translations to help you better understand the stories and lessons He wants us to know. The Bible wasn't written as a book that you can question, like a fact vs. fiction book. It was written so that we know what God has done for us. He doesn't show himself to us because He wants us to look for him. It isn't about "seeing is believing". It is about having faith and believing. I am certain that He has done something in your life that you cannot explain how it happened, you just didn't realize it was Him helping you. He doesn't come and help us when we need Him. He wants us to ask him for help, guidance, wisdom, grace, or forgiveness. He cannot perform some miracles on his own, so He will sometimes send help to you. I have had things happen in my life and that were really unexpected, things that I could only define as miracles. He is a merciful God. He gives us "tests" in our life to see how we will react or respond. He wants us to follow Him and only Him. He sent his son, Jesus, to us to prove that He is real, and Jesus taught of everyone about God. In the bible read John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Go to a church and ask the priest any questions you may have. They know the bible and will be able to help you understand His teachings. I will pray that you find God. We are here because of Him, and without Him in my life it would be empty.

As far as I can see, God has shown Himself and does every day.

Let's put it like this. Say you ARE a father. However your child has been taken away from you from very young. The only influence that you have been able to have is to drop a note now and then and send a gift. The keeper of your child however is doing everything that is possible to keep knowledge of you and your gifts and efforts surpressed from your child. You do not give up, but keep on. As your child grows, they start to see the evidence that you are around, but because of the way this child has been raised, it is very hard for them to recognize the signs that you are there, and even active in their life. The child has gotten a very harsh and standoffish mentality and as you try to get closer, because now that they are older, they have more freedom of choice, it does no good because they have been hurt and dissillusioned so many times by the caretaker. It is hard to get through.

It is no different with us. I don't know about these "old stories" you are talking about, but I do know that God has been trying to get us to hear and understand Him for ssssoooooo many years. As far as logic? I have often wondered where the logic was in loving the woman I want to marry after already being hurt so many times before. I am willing though. I am also willing to be illogical and allow this Almighty God Person to love me and help me in MY day to day life because I realize that in order for me to be able to not only survive, but thrive in this crazy world, I sure need some help! Why not from the "Maker Of It All"??

God Bless you and lead you into His Truth!

there are many questions that u wont no the answers until its time, but i can convince u that god exist if u go on with logic, u didnt see all sides there are lots more hidden, lets take u for an example, where did u come from, "from ur mother"
where ur mother came from" ur grandmother" and so on... until u reach adam and eve, its impossible to begin the human race with no human right?! so, who created adam & eve? thats first of all??
on the other hand, if i tell u that would u believe it? ((( i saw pieces of wood floating on the surface of water, suddenly they came up together and sticked, forming a boat!! with no help of anyone, or anything? would u believe it? ofcourse not! so, who made the world at first it cant be created by its own, there must be someone who began the whole thing!!

i will leave u with these questions , answer urself!
if u are not convinced i have lots and lots more waiting, u can contact me pal, its ma pleasure to convince u?!!

God does show himself, but he usually doesn't do it by breaking into the world in a bright light with a voice that sounds like thunder. He is usually subtle and very quiet. He usually works over time, in little ways. There are reasons that he does this and I don't have the space and time to explain, but believe me that he is real and that he will reveal himself to you.

By the way, it's best not to work on your own. God usually works in your life through other people. If you are trying to understand him on your own you are kind of like a blind man trying to move around in a room where he has never been. You have no idea where things are and what they are. Get some help. There are lots of ways to do this, from asking friends who you believe understand God, to reading books, to finding web sites, etc.

We see and hear God through people. When you need help, God speaks through others. When we can listen and see the love of others, we see God. Christ represented the human form of God -

This history represents a model for us to follow a path where love and tolerance are more important that the belief itself. It would be hard to argue that these messages are not positive in their own right -

To me, believing is understanding that God speaks through the lives that he has created.

If you find yourself questioning your given religion. Then it's time to find one that answer the questions you ask. Sounds like you've stopped being a defender of a faith & have become a seeker of the truth.
I have to agree with you. I'd be more religious if i could just see certain people incinerate by a bolt of lightning once in a while.

Faith comes through hearing.
Tune in your TV to a good preacher and get inspired.
Remember the Bible is full of allegories. Fundamentalists take them literally...that is why so many people can't make sense of it.

Did you look for Him truly? No, not really, not by the tone of your question ... "so I've TRIED to learn" ... see what I mean?

You haven't sought Him, you sat back and told Him to come to you. If you consider that if He's real then He is the creator of the entire universe and here you are demanding He come to you.

This hopefully explains the verse "Seek, and you shall find" ... it doesn't mean lay there like a noodle and yell demands at God, it means you have to actually do something, seek.
