I am planning to stay a hotel that is located at 215 W. 34th St. (bet. 7th & 8th). Is this a safe area? I have heard that as long as I stay below the 100's then it is decent.

Thanks!!

To karmatroll05: To put my question in perspective for you, I am a 20-year-old female who has never visited NYC and will be traveling with only one other (female) friend. I am well-aware of the fact that crime exists everywhere (I live in L.A.) and that it is not just in "your city." I asked the question hoping to elicit friendly advice from New Yorkers rather than critcism about a negative attitude that was enver alluded to in my question. As someone who is planning to be a tourist in "your city", or anywhere for that matter, I am only gathering my research so that I can have the best time possible and make smart, informed decisions while I am there.

y bother coming to nyc if you are that worried about your safety. is your city safe? no matter where you go there will be crime.

And continue to listen to the idiots who love stereotyping nyc. You will miss all the culture of everything above the 100's, especially in Harlem.

I will say this in caps: STOP LISTENING TO THE STEREOTYPICAL PEOPLE WHO SAY CERTAIN PARTS OF THE CITY ARE SAFE. NYC is one of the safest cities in the country. So if you are planning to come to my city you are visiting the WHOLE city and not just the 50's. But if you are going to continue with this negative attitude that certain parts of the city is safe and certain parts of the city are not, then don't bother coming.

Then why are you listening to what others tell you if you never visit the city? you and your friend are coming to this fine city closed minded. and don't tell me you are not because you said and i quote "I have heard that as long as I stay below the 100's then it is decent". Is that how you gather research by listening to someone telling to stay below the 100's. How do you intend to see Grant's tomb which is on 125th street, or see the Apollo theater, if you are limited to staying below the 100's? Or see the muesuems in the 100's? Did you research any of that information? Wait, no because you are listening to hearsay, and you will never get to enjoy that culture. I have lived in this city all my life, and I have seen it all and lived it all. I am 35 years old. You and your friend might be young, but this city has its fair share of young tourists, you and your friend are no exception.

I love my city, and I am getting tired of people listening to the stereotypes of nyc. I don't stereotype your city; and if I was a tourist in your city, i wouldn't ask which part is "safe". Instead, i would ask what to see and how to get there.

That area is safe, but also a bit of a dump, full of chain restaurants and crappy shoe stores. You'll be very close to some major subway hubs so get yourself an unlimited ride metrocard and take advantage of it. (Macy's is over there though and that's worth checking out).

Check out the Subway map before you leave and plan your trip out. You'll save lots of time. The 34th St stations of the A, C, and E, as well as the 2 and 3 trains are annoying and confusing, but the 34th st station of the B,D,F,V,Q,N,R, and W trains (one big station) is easier to figure out. You'll be near all of them.

Yeah, that's fairly safe. You're between Herald Square and Penn Station, so you have quick subway access (always important when I visit NYC). Just be aware of your surroundings--as you should be in any large city--don't flash money around, walk confidently, and you should be okay.

Yes that is in Midtown and that's a safe area. It's very close to Madison Square garden, Penn Station, & Macy's.
