I'm 35 and still live at home with my dad and sister. My dad is 70 and retired. Sister is 33 and mentally handicapped. She can't work. Mom passed away a little over 2 yrs ago. I work full time + overtime and pay my own bills. I don't pay rent to stay at home. ...but I do pay one of the utilities and half the groceries. I also provide transportation for them since dad doesn't have a running car. Right now I'm saddled with high payments to creditors trying to get out of the financial pickle I got into from helping my parents while they were in bankruptcy. Between that, my car note, and insurance I don't have enough money left over to pay rent at an apartment somewhere. I'm an administrative assistant so I don't make a whole lot of money.

Yes, there is a mortgage payment. The house was paid off but they re-mortgaged it (don't remember the actual term for it) so I would qualify for financial aid for the tech school. I wanted to go to a regular college but I couldn't get financial aid. Before they did that I pleaded with them not to do it because they would lose the house. ...but they felt paying for my schooling was their responsibility. At the time I was temping doing secretarial/clerical type work for $6 - $7 per hour.

My sister: Yes, I will have to be her caretaker for the rest of my life if something were to happen to my dad. She is unable to care for herself. Mentally, she's only 13. ..but if she gets sick or scared she has the mentality of 5 or 6 year old.

Those people are a couple of my dad's friends, dad's sister (and her husband), and my mom's oldest sister. They say it because I'm 35, still living at home, and not married.

Whoever says youre a moocher is no one you should even care about cuz they dont know you and are not your friend. And you dont have to answer to them for anything.

You are 35 & still living at home?? DAMN...get a life!! If you can't afford an apartment there's this thing called a 2nd job or even a 3rd job if necessary. You should try it sometime instead of being such a lazy @ss.

My best friend is your age. She voluntarily moved out when she turned 18. ..and you know what?? She couldn't afford an apartment either. She worked 3 jobs and later cut to 2 jobs when she went to college. She graduated top of her class, has a BS degree, recently got her Masters, and is making good money.

In answer to the question...
YES, you are a moocher because you don't pay rent or at least half the mortgage bill.

It definitely does not seem to me that you are a moocher. People may be accusing you of being a moocher simply because you are 35 and living at "home," but those people also need to understand the circumstances and the fact that renting an apartment is expensive. You seem to be very helpful at the house. If you had no job and were not contributing to the household at all then that would be a different story, but that does not appear to be the case with you.

It sounds like your parents were/are the moochers, if anybody, so it's only fair that your dad gives you a place to stay. I'm not sure you should have bailed them out, but that was your decision, so I won't argue against it. It's nice that you are there for your sister too, but are you planning to have her live with you for the rest of your life?
Anyway, if you are content with the situation, I don't see why you shouldn't continue in it.

So who are these people who call you a moocher? Why is their opinion important to you? If you pay your own bills and a fair share of the household bills and provide transportation, AND if your dad doesn't have a problem with you living with him and your sister, don't worry about what others say.

if you are really doing as you say then no i don't think your a moocher. yes rent is another bill but if you are helping your dad and sister phys./emot./and some what fina. then it is a family thing your supposed to help one another. it dosent matter what you do for work if you feel you are this type person talk to your dad and maybe some one to help you get you creditors inline too. there is always an answer.

I don't know about being a moocher or not but it does seem like you need to move out to get your own life. Your sister could receive social security benefits I'm sure and maybe your dad receives a pension or social security himself. If you ever have hopes of getting married, or your own place, or having kids, or anything like that you need to move out. You can care about your family and make sure they're ok but you don't have to be right there.

Wow, you have taken on alot......No they can't call you a moocher.......I think you are very admirable for sticking to the family and helping in everyway that you are. Keep it up, always remember what goes around comes around. Although I am not really religious, say your prayers God will take care of you and your family. I will say one tonight when I go to bed......So Heck you got that going for you.....and I don't really get all religious on the net, but I do love the acts that you are doing for your family. Good Luck Ken......

You're not a moocher. I've known many. You are not one. Real moochers don't ask if they are.
