Six month before the expire date is what I heard. Just want to confirm, thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I think my main concern is I tried to renew my passport 8 ~ 9 months before the expiration date in 2003 and they didn't accept it and told me I should have waited till 6 months before it expires. I need some document to prove it is the case to a US consulate as I will be applying for a working visa this month (7 months before my passport expires)

Renew your passport even when it is not yet expired when you will be leaving within six months.

if you plan on traveling soon in the near futur? 6 months is the minimum you should have left on validity in your passport, if you were to wait 6 months? and later on, let's say? a month later you wanted to travel? you would not be able to leave the country, so do it now ...
you may have an emergency, so get it renewed before you only have 6 months left of validity on your passport , better be safer than sorry .

Considering processing time I would start about nine months before it expires. Most countries require that your passport will not expire within six months before you travel.
