As a former blood center, blood collections specialist (not Red Cross), I can tell you that most of the potential blood donors are deferred from donating based on answers given during the interview process. This is, of course, based on the fact that our donors are honest and conscientious people who volunteer to give blood as humanitarians.... (this is why reputable blood centers don't pay for blood donations anymore) After the blood is collected, it is run through a battery of tests, including HIV, and Hepatitis.... if those diseases are advanced enough to show up, you would be notified, and deferred indefinitely from donating blood...

Yes, but if you think you could possibly be HIV positive you should not donate blood in case you might have it and not test positive yet. The chances of someone getting HIV from you because you were too cheap and lazy to get tested isn't something to mess around with.

dont know about that, i am sure they test for the virus and not the antibody as this can take time to appear (sero conversion) upto 6 months, your viral count is also high too at this point (1-3 months), dont donate blood for 6 months after exposure and have a hiv test before donating, also tell them too.

They test for HIV, But, they will presceen you by asking you questions, and if your in the high risk group, they won't take your blood. I was going to donate years ago, and they wouldn't take it due to me being sick at the time (common cold).

Yeah, they test all blood that's donated. If you've just recently contracted HIV though it may not show up.

before donate your blood, medical asst will check everthing about your medical history.if they notice that you are hiv +ve you are not allowed to donate any blood.same goes to people with thyroid problems,hepatisis etc.
