Do floride treatments help?
My hus was a preemie and was given LOTS of tetracycline in his first months. He was so early, no one thought he would live. Now, his teeth look terrible and it affects his feelings about the way he looks.
Is he doomed to have rotting teeth like some preemies I've seen?

So far, he's been very lucky and has not had any major rotting, just a few fillings. But the color is yellowish-brown.

Tetracycline is exactly intrinsic staining. Which is stain within the tooth. Unfortunately it cannot be whitened thru bleaching, the best and pretty much only permanent way to fix this is veneers or crowns. (porcelain caps) But not to worry, this is a very safe and painless cosmetic procedure, performed everyday allover the world. Hope this helps!

He can go for something called Vital tooth bleaching. This form of bleaching can help in reducing the intrinsic discoloration such as tetracycline staining. He should also visit a physician regarding any bone changes due to tetracycline.

THE REALLY NEGATIVE SIDE -EFFECT OF USING TETRACYCLINE BEFORE THE ERUPTION OF THE PERMANENT TEETH IS THE DARKENING OF THE ADULT TEETH.
NOTHING YOU CAN USE WILL LIGHTEN THE TEETH..
SINCE THAT TIME DENTISTS HAVE KNOWN THAT YOU MUST NEVER GIVE A YOUNG CHILD TETRACYCLINE BECAUSE OF THE DARKENING OF THE ADULT TEETH.
HE HAS SEVERAL CHOICES NOW.
HE CAN GET A "SNAP-ON-SMILE" THIS WILL ENABLE HIM TO LOOK FABULOUS AT A MINIMAL COST.
HE CAN OPT FOR VENEERS OR FULL COVERAGE CROWNS.

tetracycline ususally causes discoloration more than anything else.
if his teeth are brittle and tend to crumble he may not be metabolizing calcium properly. he may need a bone density study and a calcium citrate/magnesium citrate supplement.
