So, I'm writing a story, and I just need some ideas. Any idea, even if it's totally stupid. Well, not totally stupid, it'd be nice if it was at all relevant...
But here's the problem. There's a couple in my story, well not really couple, they broke up before the book began.
They had to keep their relationship secret, from everyone.
It's imperative that they kept it secret.
But I'm not sure WHY they kept it secret.
So any reason why two 16ish year old kids would have to keep their relationship secret would be great.
Anything at all.
Please and thank you!

Oh, it's set in the present day, they're both kind of emo kids.
They broke up because it was getting too difficult to keep it a secret from everyone they knew. They still love each other, of course...
And it's kind of a cheesy teen romance story. It's also sort of making fun of them. The couple are both at party, coincidentally, and they get paired up for 7 minutes in heaven.
Boy tells girls he still loves her and he wants to make it work, girl tells boy she doesn't think she can keep lying to all her friends...
That's basically all I have XP
I just started it a few minutes ago...lol...I get sudden urges to write sometimes.
Thanks for all the amazing answers already! You guys are all awesome! It's going to be difficult to choose from all the amazing answers =]

The boy is a known school stalker. He has stalked several girls. At least thats the rumor. She had to break it off with him, and now she found out the rumors are true. He won't leave her alone. Every where she goes he is there, the mall, her classes, "the party you mentioned". She wish she could turn to some about there secret relationship but she wants to keep her social status. Plus she doesn't want the hear the I TOLD YOU SO's from the one person she did trust in.

They're trying to keep it a secret because although they are not biologically related, their parents were married. The couple were step-siblings until three years ago when their parents divorced and the boy"s father moved him to another town. The girl's mother just moved her to the town a couple of months ago and the kids started secretly dating. No one's aware they were once step-siblings and their parents HATE each other.

You could make their familes sworn enemies because every relationship needs an obstacle to overcome, but that tactic is derivative of the old Montague/Capulet conflict in Romeo and Juliet so it's definitely not fresh. You could make them of different faiths but it would require some research on your part to ensure descriptions of the disparities between spiritual points of view are rendered realistically and in more than one dimension. Or, you could opt to make them an interracial couple in an environment that's not at all conducive to that arrangement (or even a period piece set in the 60s or 70s). What do you think?

They had to keep it a secret because...
They publicly proclaimed hate for each other when he won the school talent show. His performance as a mime, slightly defeated her tap dancing act. When he was announced the winner, she bopped him on the head with her tap dancing shoes. He fell off the stage, broke his silence as a mime and screamed in rage at her. This provoked a gang fight between the tap dancing club and the mimes club.

Perhaps they keep it a secret because they are too scard of letting the public/friends know about their relationship so they are ashamed maybe....
Or maybe, they are afraid of what some of the consquences might be from friends/family from them knowing that the couple is together.

perhaps there were rumors around town that they had the same daddy through an affair with both mothers....the rumors might be proven wrong, but the kids believe them and yet they are drawn together. And the kids know that nobody will approve because of their assumed blood relationship.

Here's some ideas:
- they are different races
- different religions
- parents don't approve (one is from wrong side of the tracks)
- one may be super popular and the other is considered a "nerd"
there are many solutions to it! try to think out of the box, some of the ideas are cliche, but they are the basics :)
Good luck!

-Because the girls parents hated the boy
-The boy has another gf
-The girl/ boy isnt supposed to date anyone.
Thats really all i can think of, the main reason why kids have to keep a relationship a secret is because of their parents though.
