Without getting me the sack,lol.
I find smiling at them defuses some of them, but not the hardened rude ones.
P.S.I am one of the nice checkout girls who is nice to the customers and would appreciate a bit of curtesy in return.
Thanks

If they say something rude, smile and say, "I'm sorry, I didn't catch that. Would you repeat it?"

I know the feeling. I'm a department manager at a big retail company. It happens all the time. I learned that 5 percent of the bad customers out their don't add up to the other 95 percent that aren't. Some customers are just having a bad day. Your the last person they will see, before they leave the store, and you may get it. The best thing to do, is just brush your shoulders off. Don't let it get to ya. Not all customers are like that, and who knows you could even be the person who can bring that customer up, when he or she is down. Remember, you have the power, or at least you have an oppurtunity to make a difference.

I heard some lousy customer being rude to a checkout person and I told them to shut it myself as there wasn't much they could do about it. I was in the queue and they were just being pathetic and complaining about everything so I got fed up as it was taking ages and the poor guy was doing his best and offering to get them new products for ones they had squashed in their basket themselves. People like that are just twits. Usually its the stress of the shop that does it so you could just say something like 'I am sorry you are not happy with our service today....is there anything I can do?' They wont have an answer because they are probably too thick. It really makes me mad to think that people are being rude to you. Its so uncalled for!!

I do sympathise with you. Many times I have been waiting in line to go throught the checkout and the customers in front of me talk down to, are rude to, or just plain awkward to the person serving them. One girl was almost in tears when it was time to serve me and I did all I could to assure her that it was not her problem but the problem of the obnoxious idiot that she had to serve. I don't know what you can do to get your own back though. The days are gone when you could have held up an item of their shopping which may have caused embarrassment to them and shout:

"Sheila, how much is the pile cream?"

The ruder they get, the nicer you should be. It annoys the hell out of them!
I really feel for you people. I work in a shop, and have to deal with some real obnoxious cretins sometimes, but since I'm the manager I can just throw them out if necessary, safe in the knowledge that my area manager will always back me up. You must just have to sit there and take it!
p.s. I always smile back at a friendly checkout operator, I know it's not your fault if I've had to wait.

there is no comment that you can say that will diffuse the situation. if they are already ticked off because of something else going on in their life or because they think the line is too slow, you commenting will probably only give them an easy target to spew venom at you.

on the other hand, if they make a direct complaint to you (not just a rude comment) commiserate with them as though you agree.

ex: "these lines are so long. i hate it!"
you should say, "i completely agree. we are going to try to implement some new techniques to handle that situation. i'll let my mgr know how you feel. thx for being so patient."

see how you wrap up the end with a little compliment that subtly reminds them about manners? you'll definitely alleviate some drama if you agree and give the impression that their issue/concern will be forwarded to a mgr. people seem to love that.

the hardened rude ones are probably looking for a opportunity to sue. if you are expecting anything you set yourself up for disapointment. business and being in business does not cater to social. you are a means for your company to take money. if there was a robot that could do it you would not have a job. i would totally ignore and detatch from anything any customer dished out. you will go home feeling a lot better. and unfortuneately the hardened rude ones are a customer and they are always right.

I've found that working with the public gives some people the right to be rude to us. I'm a nurse and I've noticed people take out their anger and frustration on the people they know cant be rude back to them. What you're doing is the best thing for your own safety. I know you feel like coming back with some smart comment, but it wouldnt do any good and as you said, it could get you fired. You can always come back with, "I'm sorry you feel that way." or something appropriate to the situation. Try to remember that you're being the nice one. Being rude cant feel very good.

I respect that line of work"Customer Service" I used to for as a Server,Bilingual Rep on the phone,in line cook, clerk at the mall..As a teenager. Now I work with horses as a intructor for beginners.
I learnt working with people you had to be consistant and very focus and gulible and take people's crap no matter what!!
Bad example of mean customers-
3 days ago-I went to Bakers a grogery store. This lady told the teenager clerk"You should've stayed in school if you can't ring the price"stupid kids!! I got mad and told OLD LADY!
Listen you are older and that shows your lack of respect for People who are just doing there best at there job..Please shut up and get your cart and NEVER come back to Bakers"!
lol lady got pissed and left..The clerk told me thanks!! and laughed..Psychos lol
I noticed older ppl are the meaner ones..Thank goodness I work alone lol
can't stand ppl NO MORE!!
I suggest you just ignore them for those 3 mins and just smile and make them feel or look stupid..Kindness kills!!
that is what I used to do.When I was a server.I had one time a RUDE customer that told me a rasist remark..I called my manager and he spoke to him...I had to put up with alot
I have gotten discriminated but..I just don't take it personal is there problem not mine..
Have a nice day!!

Two girls working on the checkouts, one says to the other, "When a man comes through my checkout, I can always guess whether he's single or married". As they're talking, a man approaches the checkout and the girl says to her colleague, "Look, I'll show you". The guy buys 1 egg, 1sausage, 1 bread roll, 1 cake and 1 yogurt. The girl says to him, "I bet you're a single guy aren't you?". "Yes, said the guy, how did you guess?". The girl replies, "Because you're so f***ing ugly!".

Call the manager to help you with the situation. Talking back to the customers will NOT defuse the situation.
