I know it's hard on the children but they need time to grieve. Buying a puppy while money is tight is not a good idea at all. Puppies require vaccinations, deworming medication, food, toys, bedding, and spaying/neutering and they definitely are not cheap to care for. It sounds like it'd be best to give them time and once they can afford a puppy to get them one.

A new dog right away is not always the best course. Give them time to grieve.
In a week or two (or a month) go down to your local shelter. Typically you can adopt a dog for as little as $35. And other people are right- the initial fee is just the start. If you can't afford proper food and veterinary care, then hold off on getting a new dog.
You can also read this poem together, called "The Rainbow Bridge". It's about how we'll see our beloved pets again someday:

Go to a Shelter! Or try craigslist.org. You should get an older puppy that is already vaccinated and possibly altered if finances are an issue. There are tons of dogs on there needing homes, and families charge small adoption fees, and the shelters are around thesame. Either place should work for you.

I understand that it can be upsetting to a young child.
But my best advice to you is that if money is tight, dont get a dog. You need to be able to properly care for it, and vet visits can be expensive.
Most places will not adopt free dogs out, especially if they are in good health. And adoption agencies like donations, and will also omake you sign a form that you are required to get the dog neutered or spayed. If that is the case then it is just as expensive as adopting a dog.
On the other hand any SPCA ect will be able to adopt a dog out to you for a minimal fee.. as long as you can prove to be a willing and loving home

Try www.craigslist.org and go to CA. You'll see a list of cities in California. Choose the one closest to you and go to Pets. People are ALWAYS giving away or selling (cheaply) dogs.
Good luck and sorry about the loss of the dog.

My grandson went through that when my son's dog Luke died a few years ago. Luke was very much a "boys" dog. He loved boys, he loved running and playing and put up with everything they did to him. Kaleb, my grandson, loved Luke at least as much as his Uncle Kevin did. I helped him to grieve by talking about Luke with him whenever he wanted to. We went over why he died at least 50 times. (Because his body was too sick to keep working. He had cancer which can be a very bad sickness.) I think it was very beneficial for Kaleb, though, because about a year after that my stepfather died of liver cancer. It sparked a whole new round of questions from Kaleb, (who is 6 now), but I think it helped him to deal with his beloved Opa's death better because he'd already gone through it with Luke. Get a new dog eventually but give the children time to grieve first, THEN get a new dog. Maybe you'll be in a better position financially then too.

Try http://www.petfinder.com
Put your zip code in the Location part of the search engine.
Remember, though, that the adoption fee is just the beginning. Dogs and puppies need supplies, routine veterinary care, vaccinations, flea preventatives, spaying and neutering. Christmas is coming, which means even tighter budgets.
If money is short, you might want to wait.

www.freecycle.org,
and Craigslist,
these are free sites, where many families recycle, and try to find homes for their pets that they can't keep anymore.
Also like others said, Local animal shelters and Dog wardens have strays,
The only think is that their is a fee,
100 bucks or less
Good Luck

You do not state why the dog passed away. If it was from illness, be sure you throuoghly clean and disenfect everything in and around your home, or you run the chance of your new pet getting sick also.
You can try looking on Craigslist for your area. Good Luck...
